Aaaaaah the crappy interior pieces we all know an love. I've replaced a small mountain of interior knick-knacks over the past 8 years. I love my car, but GM coulda done a better job on it's interior materials.1997 Camaro, Y87 Perf. Here are some diagrams from the Autozone web site showing how the airdam is mounted.

I ricer rigged a peice of sheet metal as a temporary airdam to hold me over until I hit the salvage yards, and holy crap! Let me tell you that $2 peice of sheet metal that I bent with my bare hands added so much power to my car it was ridiculous! first off now even in city traffic my temp gauge never rises more then 1/4 and on the freeway this car is a totally differnt machine. before when my temp. guage sat at a little over 3/4 all the time my car would jump off the line and then the power would drop off after 3,000 RPM, and when I would floor it on the hiway the engine would rev, but I would barely accelerate. Now ever since the airdam the engine pulls hard through out the whole RPM range, and on the freeway I'm catapaulted from 60-100 mph with little effort. I never realized that the absence of a cheap looking peice of plastic robbed me of that much power. Since the sheet metal air dam was put in the average engine temp now sits steady in the 170-180 degree range, quite the dramatic improvement from almost touching the 260 degree redline. This is no joke, I would gladly pay hundreds in aftermarket upgrades that would produce that kind of power gain, AND I GOT IT FROM A $2 PEICE OF SHEET METAL!!!!

I'm not sure, but I think the engine may also take defensive measures that limit power when its close to overheating in order to protect itself. One of the HP Tuner guys can probably tell us if that's true or not.1997 Camaro, Y87 Perf. Yea, as soon as it starts drifting towards the red, the engine puts up it's shield and is thinking, "Stupid human, it must be a woman".

Well I got rid of my peice of sheet metal and put on an actual oem air dam ($35 at the stealership) and now my engine runs a hell of alot cooler in traffic. Unless its total grid lock the thermo needle never goes past the 1/4 mark. Also when I check the radiator hoses right after I drive they don't feel like they are about to burst like they did all the time before, and on top of all that my tranny cooler is actually cooling the transmission fluid. I can't believe I drove for a month with out one!
