  • I need everyones input asap please

i purchased a 98 firebird but the guy i bought it off unplugged the sensor out of the intake hose and has a resistor in it so that its tricking the engine and giving me extremly ****ty gas milage !

my only delima is i cant find anyone that carries that part and i dont really know what its called or what it ranges around. so thats why i need your guys help

all i can tell you is that its a adapter that is in the intake hose where i plug in a cable with a plug on the end that comes from the throtle body. it basically plugs into that hole on the whisper lid

          IAT sensor, autozone, price varies.

That is not the culprit for your bad gas mileage either, it just adds timing to the tables with the resistor, not fuel

Try scanning the system and see what codes come up. Make sure your air filter is clean... a bad O2 sensor will cause crappy mileage. See what the scan says and go from there. That resistor trick is pretty common. Supposed to give you 15 HP - :bs:

but you would think that the resistor is making the car run rich and with heat and cold weather its only fooling the car and making it worse? isnt it bad to make the car think its running rich constantly when it isnt? and i dont think it adds 15hp if anything its like 3mph to the top end.

The idea of the resistor is *** backwards. The PCM is pig rich at WOT from the factory. Why would you want it even richer? The PCM reads the O2 sensors at part throttle and keeps the AFR at 14.7:1, so it does nothing there.

Why would a resistor make a car run rich.

It's not going to. Like 97rs4life said.

Eh.. However, if this theory I'm making up is right.. It increases timing, which would make for a leaner environment that the o2 sensors read which in turn would add fuel to get the stoich 14.7

But I only heard that adding timing creates a leaner environment.. That's the part I'm unsure of.

I need someone who really knows to give some feedback here..

A bad sensor CAN cause terrible gas mileage;however as far as the resistor having something to do with is highly doubtful. You even know what a resistor is a what it does?

Yeah, the resistor gives the PCM false readings. So how's it have nothing to do with it?
