    Re: oil pressure range

it is normal for it to drop at idle

that seems to be about the same as my oil pressure also

My 2000 Bird and 1999 Camaro never did this...

Why does my 1998? It has to be hot outside and sitting for awhile before it will drop, not near 30 though... Is it worn bearings; clearance maybe?

Jaysan, what year is your car?

if the oil pressure doesnt drop at idle there is a problem.. it is most likely the gauge

i know the 98's had a different temp gauge than the 99+ so the oil psi gauge must be the same way

I know mine has to be real hot to drop below 60 PSI I use RP 20w50 , but it goes down to about 40-50 PSI , they make a oil PSI kit that will boost your oil PSI to around 80-85, this might be for turbos through, I don't know for sure.

mine is at 65 when first started, 60 when driving, and goes down as far as 25 psi when idling warmed up.

Wow, so pretty much everyone has this then. Tonight Im going to look in the manuals to see what the operation rage should be...

So Im also guessing temp has to do with it as well. Hotter it gets the thinner it gets. Therefor going past the bearings quicker? And idle too, not enough RPM to build up enough pressure before it seeps through the bearings...

should be 60 psi at 1850 rpm if not u problay have main bearings going bad . have a 98 firebird doing rebuild because of this problem found main bearings and cam bearings worn

Ok then, I just got some quaker state oil and AC Delco filter... That OK for a 170K mile car? Mine never goes below 40 btw

funny that you ask. mine sometimes bobs around (acts like it's got A.D.H.D). when I start her she goes to 60psi. As I drive it drops to 55psi anything above 1500rpm. when idle it drops to 25-35psi. and when i mean bobs it might show 25, then jump to 35 and back to 25, then 35 and so on. think i gotta drop the oil pan and check my oil pick up and if that's fine oh yay main bearings for me... *sigh* of course I'll check the sending unit first and a manual gauge before I do any of that...

I would say oil pressure sending unit. Ive had other vehicles that did this and that was my issue...
