P044 Code...

I just purchased my 02 Firebird, and the very next day, the Fuel Pump died. There was no SES or anything on but the Dealer covered it under warranty. Well FIRST they tried to install a used Fuel Pump but it didn't work so they SAY they went out and got a NEW fuel pump. Car runs again.

About a week later, the SES comes on for a P044 Code... I had it scanned at Autozone and they said it was most likely a faulty Gas Cap, so I replaced the Gas Cap and reset the code, about 3 days later the SES comes back on for the same Code.. Could this be the work of a bad or improperly installed Fuel Pump?

Vehicle Application: 2002 Pontiac Firebird 3.8L
Customer Concern: Trouble code P0440.
Tests/Procedures: 1. Before starting, verify that the customer did not leave the gas cap loose at any time or fill the gas tank with the engine running. This can set a code P0440.

2. Using a scanner, verify that the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage reads about 1.5 volts with the gas cap loose.

3. Check all Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) lines, seals and components for leaks.

4. Verify that the purge solenoid allows vacuum to pass through when energized by a scanner. It should seal shut when de-energized.

5. Install a long hose on the vent solenoid. While commanding the vent solenoid on with a scanner, place the hose to your mouth and suck against the solenoid. The solenoid should be sealed shut when energized by the scanner.

6. Do this procedure with the vent solenoid several times. Vent solenoids often leak on an intermittent basis.

Tech Tips: Note: The purge solenoid is a normally closed solenoid. The vent solenoid is a normally open solenoid.

Where is the Purge and Vent Solenoids on this vehicle?

Also whenever I open the gas cap, I do not hear the hissing sound from a depreasurized fueltank.

Yes, there is a vent line on the tank that could have been left off.

wait i dont hear any kind of pressure in my tank when i open the cap either and i have no ses lights on at all even when i run the thing empty?

Where is the Purge and Vent Solenoids on this vehicle?

If I remember correctly, the purge solenoid is on the passenger side of the engine, behind the alternator. The vent solenoid is on the end of a rubber hose, on the driver's side, near or above the rear axle.

the solenoid should be running into your manafold or throtle body and if you hear a hissing noise then your solenoid is stuck closed that whole system is there just to keep evaporated gas from geting into the air it just send the vapors to the manafold to be burned the first thing u should do is check your gas cap
