I was just wondering if anyone has used the "engine restore" that you can find at wal-mart,k-mart ect. I comes in a silver looking can with a blue label. I have a friend that has tried it and he swears it is good stuff.

if you read the can it says you have to use it every time you change the oil for it to work.. this tells me that the stuff "washes" away..
they advertise that it can raise compression.. well if you dump some heavy weight oil in your crank case you can do the same thing because the thicker oil will help the rings seal..
so why pay almost 10 bucks for this stuff when you can go buy a quart of heavy weight oil for a buck and proably do about the same thing..
IMO it's not worth the money..-Brad

Somewhere along the line, I've actually heard it can damage your engine. Back when I was still a Ford kid (hey, everyone makes mistakes ;) ) I used some in my 89 F-150 and it did seem to help the rattling around the truck did . . . a little bit. I've also used an oil stop leak that worked quite well on my 86 camaro.
BUT - all I have to say is one simple thing. If it comes in a bottle, it's a temporary solution to a permanent problem. --- Car fixes do not come in bottles. (Unless you're just working to trade the car in, or sell it for a good price, real quick ;) )

I've used it in three high mileage vehicles, to get some more life out of the bearings and rings. I only used it one time per vehicle. And then I started running slick 50 every third oil change in each of them after that, since if any of the "restore" did cling to the bearings and cylinders, I wanted it to stay there, without having to re-treat them and take a chance on getting too much buildup.
On the first two cars, I had to replace the oil pressure sending unit afterwards. It plugged both of them. I didn't make the connection until much later... All I knew at the time is that I suddenly developed low oil pressure readings, and replacing the sending unit corrected it in both cases. It happened about a month after adding the restore, in both instances. The first car was a '79 Mercury Marquis wagon with a 351w. The second was a '78 T/A (black and gold, t-top, california emissions car with the 403 olds engine, I loved that car...) The third was a beater '78 Ford pickup with a 302.
About a year after putting restore in the T/A, my then wife outran a Michigan trooper in it near Detroit at 150mph+, so I would say the restore didn't hurt anything in that situation... :)
I wouldn't take a chance on using it in a low mileage vehicle, but I did on the three high mileage ones, figuring I didn't have anything to lose. It could plug narrow oil passages (lifters, oil spray nozzles if so equipped, etc.)
I wouldn't wait until you have a bad knock, and then expect it to fix it though... Once the clearances open up too much, nothing is going to fill the gaps.\'98 A4 Camaro v6->v8 conversion, and STS kit next
v6: 13.6 Powerdyne, 13.2 150 shot, 13.8 120 shot, 14.3 85 shot, 15.7 stock
v8(na): 12.18@113, 392rwhp
Moderator on www.mtfba.org and www.frrax.com (Road Race & Autocross)
Car pics, TN Region SCCA

The 3.4L I have has about 95000 miles on it so I thought I would try it in there. I have heard 50/50 good and bad. I hope that just one oil change of that stuff wont hurt it1995 3.4L
K@N FIPK, SLP Fan Switch, Jet Chips 2 stage, Jet Chips Underdrive Pulley, Accel Coils, Nology Plug wires, RKSport Headers, Catco Cat

Crazy, I just put this in mine today, sifts feel smoother and engine actualy does seem to run and feel alot better, altho I think its more because the oil is pretty burnt and getting "gooey" <- my car definatly needs an oil flushing. But anyways, it definatly was a noticable difference in mine.3.4L Red Firebird

nasty nasty stuff... never run it, ever! If you have mechanical problems, paraffin viscocity improvers in a silver can with moly is not going to cure anything!

I e-mailed the people who make the stuff and here is what they sent me:
"Please let me know who said this as we would like to find out what they are
doing WRONG with the regular maintenance of their equipment. Oil sludge
signifies bad maintenance procedures, i.e. OLD OIL !
Restore contains microscopic particles, suspended in a high quality engine lube
oil base, that 'repairs' and 'restores' internal metallic surfaces between
regular oil changes.
The only reason that oil passages EVER get clogged is if the operator changes
the lube oil at inconsistent and excessive mileages (and allows the detergent
lube oil to boil off the high end components and become a sludge). This lack of
regular maintenance can be very expensive in engine failures. The best and
cheapest insurance in the world is to change the lube oil on time. Restore
complements this process by re-metallizing the internal components between
regular oil changes keeping the engine in tip-top shape.
To summarize:
Restore will improve the condition of internal metal surfaces ("re-metallize").
Restore will not remove the need to change the lube oil at the manufacturers'
recommended intervals."1995 3.4L
K@N FIPK, SLP Fan Switch, Jet Chips 2 stage, Jet Chips Underdrive Pulley, Accel Coils, Nology Plug wires, RKSport Headers, Catco Cat
