Hot Weather + Oil Change = No No

hey guys so i definently had the oil change from hell today and learned a lesson. I had a day off of work and the weather was nice so i wanted to work on the camaro a bit. I woke up around noon and worked on the car about an hour later at 1, the weather in milwaukee had been in the mid 90s and sunny. I went along with the usual process of changing a cars oil and when i got to the part where you remove the old oil filter; the oil filter wrench caused the metal STP filter to not turn but crush inwards like paper....there i was not able to get my oil filter off and it was crushed inwards like an inch. Luckily i talked to a local friend mechanic who told me to take a screw driver and put it through the filter and just twist it off...did that and the screw driver just made long gashes in the hot metal filter everytime i tried turning it. I waited till at night to try it again when the temperature dropped and me and my buddy finally got it using two people and two screw drivers.

Moral of the story... do not change your oil when its 94 degrees outside hahaha

you definitly taught me a lesson. and i know what you mean where you think its just gonna be fun then you get in there. things dont go your way and you just wanna drive it off a cliffhaha. but yes next time DONT tighten the oil filter down so much. what you do is. (you scrw the filter on till the SEAL TOUCHES the metal contact point where the filter seals witht eh block. once you touch it. TURN is 1 1/2 turns tight and thats all you do=])

ive done that with 454 big blocks and no oil leaks. then when i change the oil. I can just use my hand and twist it off =]

Had an experience similar to that about a month ago. Had to change the oil on the Grand Prix and we decided we would do it ourselves rather than take it to the dealership, since the warranty recently expired. Draining it was fine, but once it came time to switch the filters, we realized that the dealership had torqued down the oil filter too hard last time they changed the oil. Took a few trips to Autozone, two different oil filter removers, and a lot of patience to get that sucker off. Screwdriver trick didn't work for us either.

...ahhh i hate the dealer method.
which is (wellll lets see how tight we can make things so theyll have to come back. hmmm. we"ll tighten that....and that.....and that...and ooo. this should be good. and that.) haha yeah i know cause my brother in law owns one and thats what all there mechanics do...sadly

If you put the wrench as close to the bottom of the filter as possible, this won't happen. Or as close to the top as possible. but don't put it in the middle of the filter.

^ what he said; and make sure to oil the gasket on the filter well before installing it.

Oh, and btw it's 3/4 to 1 turn on the filter after the gasket makes contact - you should be able to tighten it by hand if it is easily accessible.

buy a k and n oil filter it has a 1" nut welded on the end so you can use a ratchet that will never happen again..

if you get the k&n gold class oil filters, they come with a 1" nut at the bottom so that all you have to do to remove it is take a wrench or socket and it comes off like butter.

just don't tighten it like that!!

You guys should try removing the oil filters and fuel filters on these fedex switchers after 2nd or 3rd shift gets a hold of them. I had to use a breaker bar on a drain plug before. Some people just don't have any sense.

Ive been using Purolator filters that are textured for awhile now, never had a problem removing a filter.
