  • HELP, at work, car won't start, tried search

Alright, my car won't start. I'm at work right now. When I drove to work this morning absolutely no problems at all. Couple hours later I attempt to run to Radio Shack for something and nothing happens.

When I put the key in, with the door open, sometimes the door chime will start going off, sometimes not.

When I turn the key to ACC nothing happens, except my powered stereo face unit will pop out and the stereo & amps work fine. No dash lights, no fuel pump pressurizing, nothing.

Also, no security light, which leads me to believe it's not the chip in the key.

Any ideas? If it's fixable now I need to try and have it working by 3:30 for a dentist appointment.

    Thanks! George

Try unpluggin the negative battery cable and then pluggin it back on after few minutes.
    Also check fuses.

I checked all the fuses before I posted, and they are all good. The tools I have here at work are kind of limited to screwdrivers basically, so I can't unhook the - battery cable, but I will keep that in mind.

A search at camaroz28.com led me in the direction of the ignition switch. Anyone know if the ignition switch will cause those problems?

      Thanks, George

For anyone who may in the future have this problem, it WAS the ignition cylinder.

Since there doesn't seem to be any good info on these boards (that I can find) about this, here is a little taste.

If your car won't start, and your dashboard guages & lights do not work, and the fuel pump does not engage when you turn the key, AND the 'security' light is NOT on ...then it is probably the ignition cylinder. $35 or so from the dealer, I got the same AC Delco part for $20 at A-Line Auto Parts.
If the security light is on, it's probably gonna be something with the VATS (the resistor/chip in your ignition key or the components that read the resistance)
If when you turn the key you hear clicking or ticking noises, look towards your battery, alternator, or starter.

Little warning ...replacing the ignition cylinder is a MAJOR P.I.T.A!!! If you have small arms and hands, it may be a little easier. You HAVE to drop the steering wheel to get at it, because it's on top of the column. I would not attempt this unless you are pretty good at fixing things, and have a good supply of patience. If you are someone who has just started doing oil changes, you probably need to get someone to do it for you.

Well that's all i'm gonna share now. I gotta go finish putting my car back together.

Try cleaning your chip on your key .
I had what sounds like the same problem.

Mine had some clear silicone on it from work.
i was freaked .Then about an hour later i felt like an ***.
