  • Alternator or battery?

    My car just died on me tonight. I know its either the alternator or the battery. I was driving around at night, i noticed the headlights weren't as bright as usual, about 10 minutes goes by and the brights wouldn't come on and the normal lights were almost out, the engine was kinda sounding funny. I was able to pull it to my local shop, I turned it off and it wouldn't start again. Which do you think it is? By the way, I know this is a Camaro website, but this wouldn't matter which kind of car, this could happen to any, this is a 1986 Volvo. I have a Camaro too, but I dont have any problems with it, lol.

    I'd check the Alt. first, because thats what happened to me with my Camaro. I took it to Advanced and they checked my electrical system for free and determined that was the prob also my battery was near the end of its life anyways.Hope this helped.

      It's the Alt..it stopped charging the battery while you were driving so the battery eneded up getting drained, and that's why you started to see your electrical equipment go dim....you're lucky it didn't go out while driving....your power steering would have gone and it wouldda have been hard to steer!

        Yeah it was the Alt. What really sucks is that you have probably damaged the battery in the process. When an alternator goes out, your sole source of power is that battery. You drove on it enough to cause the lights to go dim. Unless that sucker was a deep cycle or an Optima battery, you will probably never hold a full 12.5(?) volts again. Didn't it trip the SES?

          definately the alternator. I had that problem as well. And Shadly the SES light wouldn't come on because it's a Volvo and they don't have one! [img]tongue.gif[/img] Plus in the camaro's the check gauges light comes on instead (due to the fact that the voltage meter drops).

            Would the check gauges light come on? Voltage is still being supplied from the battery... It happened to me once in the Camaro, but I don't remember what happened. I know I was able to catch it right away so it didn't leave me stranded.

            Sorry about your Volvo, Red94Camaro. I am a Swede, but I think my culture and its cars are a bit nutty... no service light???
