  • Which oil?

I was doing a little research on the different types, grades, and brands of oil and found quite a few of the LS(x) owners are using amsoil 0w-30. I'm curious what is everyone using and how well is it holding up.

I'm using Mobil 1 5W-30 full synth BTW

RP is not all that great. you need to change it more often than most other oils and its not as good at preventing dry starts. used it once now im staying away from it

the first number is the weight and the last number is the heat density. or (the temp at which the oil has maximum vicosity before it breaks down)

i use 10-30 synthetic penzoil platinum or mobil 1 synthetic. with lucas oil additive and mystery oil.

                        Re: Which oil?

I was using Mobil 1 Synthetic 10-30 with a Wix(51036) long style filter.

I switched to Quaker State Synthetic oil 10-30 but I think I will be switching back as I have noticed the oil pressure is a little lower with the QS.

                          Re: Which oil?

Multi-weight oils are made possible by adding polymers to oil. The polymers allow the oil to have different weights at different temperatures. The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil at a cold temperature, while the second number indicates the viscosity at operating temperature.

At cold temperatures, the polymers are coiled up and allow the oil to flow as their low numbers indicate. As the oil warms up, the polymers begin to unwind into long chains that prevent the oil from thinning as much as it normally would.

I was using Mobil1 10w30 until my rebuild @ 165,000 miles (no problems). I am still breaking in with Valvoline conventional 5w30 since almost all of my internal parts are at a tighter tolerance now, and will probably be switching to a race oil such as royal purple XPR 5w30 with more anti wear additives like zinc and phosphorus.

                            Re: Which oil?

I use to run reg. 10W/30 , then RP 10W/30 , now I run RP 20W/50 , I feel its alot better for the 116-120 temps in AZ. Also will be running a turbo here soon and they require a thicker oil. I haven't felt any difference N/A between the RP 10w/30 and 20w/50, but the 20w/50 should hold up alot better in the high heat of AZ. My built engine has about 45,000 miles on it and still holding up great. Also run longer oil filters and will be adding a remote dual oil filter for extra filtration.

                              Re: Which oil?

Instead of making a new thread I'll ask here. My friend and I are changing our oil in our Firebirds in the morning and I have a quick question.

My car, 1995 3.4 5-speed with almost 163k miles. Since my car is getting up in the mileage should I switch to a different weight (I've heard of this for higher mileage cars...not sure why?). I've been running 10w30.

My friends car is a 2002 3.8 auto with 46k miles. Keep using 10w30 since its not that high of mileage?
