My car, 1995 3.4 5-speed with almost 163k miles. Since my car is getting up in the mileage should I switch to a different weight (I've heard of this for higher mileage cars...not sure why?). I've been running 10w30.

My friends car is a 2002 3.8 auto with 46k miles. Keep using 10w30 since its not that high of mileage?
just keep using what ever you have been using.

You have to change it more often when you first start using it because it has mor cleaning power than anything else then after your engine is clean you can go 12,000 miles before changing....i would stick to 3,000 though cause 12,000 is very scary

How often should I change Royal Purple in my passenger car?
Royal Purple recommends following the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals while the vehicle is under factory warranty. In clean engines that are no longer under warranty, oil change intervals may be extended up to every 12,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. Oil filter changes should be done as recommended by the filter’s manufacturer and oil should be topped off as needed.
In dirty engines, Royal Purple recommends the standard 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil and filter change interval until the engine oiling system is clean and free of deposits left by lower quality oils and / or poor maintenance or mechanical problems. This will allow time to gradually remove existing deposits without overloading the oiling system. Mechanical problems such as fuel dilution, coolant leaks into the crankcase, poor air filtration and / or failure to maintain proper oil level are all detrimental factors to the service life of any engine oil. Any one of these factors can significantly shorten the useful service life of any oil.

I would love to see proof of that or at least why you think that.

As to the question I am using Red Line 0W30 right now

            Re: Which oil?

i only use conventionals, preferably penzoil 10w-30. Synthetic is supposidly REALLY bad for your engine if youve been previously running a conventional oil. But to each his own i guess.

I use castrol syntec full synthetic 10W30 with a mobil 1 m-101 filter. I've got 104k on the car. I bought it new and that is the only oil I have ever put in it.

                    Re: Which oil?

Have you done your research on Royal Purple? Its was overated and people are paid to support their products. If you really want my opinion Amsoil is the way to go but really expensive so I can't afford to use it. I use Castrol in all my vehicles and I now have 170k on my car. I change mine every 3-4k miles with a K&N filter every now and then if not K&N then a AC Delco one.

Im working off the experence i had with RP in my engine last year. I noticed a lower pressure from startup to shut down, and the lefter tap ( dry starting in cold weather) lastes between 2 and 3 times what it did with mobile 1. To each there own just my .02
