It works very well. No mess no fuss. If you feel like unscrewing the dran plug afterwards, have at it.

FYI, the larger oil filter will not fit in there with a 1LE sway bar. Dangit. ;)

I have been using the larger filter. I change the filter every 2,500 miles. I change the oil at 7,500. I use Mobile One, and Fram oil filters. Now do not be bad mouthing Fram they are fine with me. They have three types for our 3800's. I get the best one they sell for our cars.

Now here is a curve I have never heard discussed. A friend of mine asked how I changed my oil, and I told him. He asked why I did not suck the oil out of the dip stick hole. He went on to tell me that is how they do it on inboard boats. The first time he did it he pulled the plug afterwards, and did not get oil out the plug hole. There was just a couple of cc's in the back of the plug. So I called JC Whitney and picked one up for about $20.00 with shipping. A tube goes into the dip stick pipe, hooks up to a hand held pump which runs off 12volts. The other tube goes into what ever you want to put the oil into. You hook the pump up to your cars 12volt supply hit the switch, and suck the oil out. Prior to sucking the oil out I remove the filter, and the filler cap.
I also let the car sit for a couple of hours before I suck the oil out. The first time I did it I pulled the plug after sucking the oil out....no oil left. Just some food for thought.

Woah, I really like this idea. Here in Lubbock I don't have a good place to change my oil myself and don't have any ramps here. I can bearly fit my head under my car when it's not jacked up so I usually end up paying somebody to pour in my oil for me.

Where can you get one of these other that JCWhitney? Does anybody see any drawbacks to this?

Mercury and OMC inboards have a threaded dipstick collar that screws on to their pumps. Makes it really easy. There are also universal pumps out there. I work at a boat store and we have had the best luck with the hand pumps. The electric ones break quickly. If you want one i believe www.overtons.com has them.

you could also look up the filter for a 4.3 V6, that will give you the part number of whatever your favorite brand oil filter is.

Why do you say that? I have the Z28 swaybars in mine and they fit fine, so I can't see a slightly larger one not working (the filter is far enough above the bar). Are they shaped different from the standard and Z28 swaybars?

I don't see why it souldnt fit, the only difference in the 1LE's is thickness and 28mm to 32mm in diameter difference is only 2mm radius difference which isn't much at all...

the bigger (ACelco) filter is just longer, not wider...

I tried that filter on my car and could not get it on there with the 1LE bar, it fit fine with the stock one. Maybe the shape is different. The filter was too long and I could not get it on the threads straight to tighten down.

I usually don't do it, because I will pour an extra quart through, just to clean things out a little.

Alright, After spending $50 on a manual pump instead of the electic ones from somebody's suggestion, IT DOESN'T WORK!!! There's something in my kipstick tube that won't alow the suction tube to go far enough in. Did you remove this or do I have a fluke car when they have something that everybody else's doesn't?

you could always take 2 mintues to put the car on ramps and drain it..............

How is installing a pump easier than loosening a drain bolt? Whatever floats your boat. Actually, I do see a downside to this... you run the risk of dripping oil sludge onto your clearcoat.

Well here was the original idea. Here at college I don't have a set of ramps or even a floor jack. Somebody proposed this idea of sucking the oil out and I thought it was a great idea for when I'm here. So I bought the pump for $50 and when it came time to change my oil I couldn't get it to work.

Good thing I have long arms and can just fit part of my head under the car to take the drain plug off. I'll be doing it this way from now on but I'm just not happy that I wasted $50 on this stupid pump instead of putting it towards anouther mod or more alcohol or something productive.

So if anybody is interested in a pump mines on sale. Here is the link http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=5517

Just be sure and check if you can get a tube down your dipstick first.

Your jack is behind your spare tire. I didn't mean to make that sound smart-a$$, but a lot of people forget that they have a means of lifting a corner of their vehicle for purposes other than changing a tire.
