Just did an oil change and this time I used the oversized PF52 filter instead of the PF47. Since its larger, the engine took 5qts of oil instead of 4.5 to make the full mark.
Everything went well, oil pressures look fine, car drives fine . I hope the larger oil filter helps out, has anyone else done this yet?

Thanks for the info! I get tired of keeping up with the 1/2 quart! I bet it would be much easier to deal with 5 quarts instead of 4.5! :D
Try the 4.3 quarts that the 3.4L calls for.
Does anyone know of a larger filter to fit the 3.4? The thing is so dinky and small it doesn't look like it could even be used on a lawnmower.
I use a larger filter too. My friend is a mechanic and before he was going to do my first oil change, he looked in and told me I had enough room for a larger filter. Hey, nothing wrong with keeping the engine oil cleaner, right ? I have used the larger filter in all my changes and never had a problem. It seems to work well in keeping the oil clean too!

while we are on the oil change and filter subject... I always put some fresh oil in my filter and roll it around to get the filter well lubed before putting it on the car.. of course if it was a vertical fliter I would fill it but since it is horizontal I just add oil roll the filter around to get it get to all the filter media and do that over and over adding a little more every time until I can't turn it on it's side without oil coming out.... soooooo the whole purpose for this post.. anyone else do this??

I sure do :D. By 'wetting' the filter with oil you prevent the filter element from exploding outwards when it gets hit with 60+PSI of oil :D Good practice..
hey card, can you give us those part numbers again please, and also the vehicle that it's made for? i can't find mobile 1 filters anywhere out here, the best i can find are k&n, so i'll try and find one through them. thanks man
I have been using the larger filter. I change the filter every 2,500 miles. I change the oil at 7,500. I use Mobile One, and Fram oil filters. Now do not be bad mouthing Fram they are fine with me. They have three types for our 3800's. I get the best one they sell for our cars.
Now here is a curve I have never heard discussed. A friend of mine asked how I changed my oil, and I told him. He asked why I did not suck the oil out of the dip stick hole. He went on to tell me that is how they do it on inboard boats. The first time he did it he pulled the plug afterwards, and did not get oil out the plug hole. There was just a couple of cc's in the back of the plug. So I called JC Whitney and picked one up for about $20.00 with shipping. A tube goes into the dip stick pipe, hooks up to a hand held pump which runs off 12volts. The other tube goes into what ever you want to put the oil into. You hook the pump up to your cars 12volt supply hit the switch, and suck the oil out. Prior to sucking the oil out I remove the filter, and the filler cap.
I also let the car sit for a couple of hours before I suck the oil out. The first time I did it I pulled the plug after sucking the oil out....no oil left. Just some food for thought.
well, you can do that, but thats why they put the drain bolt in in the first place!
Now, when I change my differential fluid I suck if out using a drill pump, I just pump out all the old I can and then put in the new - works quite well and keeps me from having to replace a gasket or get oil everywhere.
I used to own an inboard boat, and yes we did suck/pump the oil out of the engine using the same drill pump I used on my differential.
If you do like I do and remove the fill-cap when changing your oil, you'll allow the old oil to flow out much more easily. When I let mine drain, I let it drain for at least 20 minutes or more until it doesnt drip at all. Whatever old oil that *might* be left in there won't hurt anything anyhow.
