You do not necessarily need springs but they wouldn't hurt. A bit more work though.

With any change of rocker ratio or cam lift change you need to do some major checking first...

Your current springs may bind with any change in lift (rocker ratio or cam lift), and this will require a change in spring. Depending on the cam/spring/retainer combo, machine work may also be required on the spring seats and valve guides.

There may be other options that will get you around all the problem stuff. An example... GM's crate 3.4L uses a Crane cam (H-260-2) that is very strong. It requires more spring, but GM have sorted this all out and offer a spring and retainer combo that works properly - correct seat pressure with about 0.1" more installed height for the spring with no machine work on the head.

Unfortunately for you and I, this Crane cam is missing the cam position trigger that is used with the 3.4 SFI. There may be other cams out there that would provide a higher level of performance than the stock cam, but you are going to have to shop around and ask the right questions.

The additional work I spoke of is getting the springs off and seated back on. Just takes a lot more time
