  • Misfire when racing through the gears

The title pretty much says it. When I race through the gears and shift over 5kish usually when I get into 3rd gear the check engine light starts flashing and i instantly let off and coast in netrual. I then scan the car and it is normally cylinder 4 misfire. Sometimes it is random misfire. Whats wrong with my car? Have new plugs and wires. I never had this problem when i was an automatic running the auto pcm. When i was running with the M5 with the auto pcm it didnt do it either. It seems now that I am running the M5 pcm it started to do this. I got the pcm from pcms4less.com and had it pretuned for 1.8 rockers. Im supposed to go to NYI on Wednesday to race so i gotta fix this problem soon. Or no race track :(

i have a new icm and new coils on the way, i will see if that makes a diff. I cant feel the misfire, but the pcm is telling me it is :-/

I have the 3.8 and i just converted to M5.

Sounds a injector is starting to go, mine had a bad one that would misfire and finally found it after a year, replaced wires, coils, plugs and ICM and it was a injector going out. PCMforless can't pretune a pcm for 1.8 rockers, you have to have a wideband setup and have hptuners to do a correct tune on it. Pcmforless is only good for the minor thing like gears, fans top speed, rev limiter, and disable TQ mangement.

Did you do a case relearn when you changed the PCM?

I did not, could this be the culprit to my misfire? After doing some research i am starting to think that it possibly is. My friend keeps telling me its not since im not throwing other codes related to the crank. Im going to do a relearn soon and will let you guys know if that solved the problem. Its not the coils or icm since i just swaped them and it still does it.

Everyone likes to relate your problem to the "exact same thing that happend to me." You mentioned you changed your plugs and wires, possibly have a cracked wire or plug? Just do the stuff that is free first to eliminate problems, such as a visual inspection of parts that you have recently replaced. Since you recently did plugs, and the #4 misfire is the code you pull, inspect that wire for melting, and even pull the plug and see if its cracked. Then continue on from there. You just did coils and and icm, so you can eliminate those.

Also, don't change the ICM just yet if you can return it unused. I have found from experience that (I think) the ICM is what tells the PCM there is a misfire. If the ICM is the cause of the misfire, it does not appear to set a code, because it doesn't tattle on itself. So if you were getting misfires w/ no code, I think the ICM would be the culprit. But since you have codes, I'll bet it's something besides the ICM.

Im keeping the new ICM and coils so I dont have to worry about them for a long time.

Autozone checks ICM and coils for free just to cross those off the list

Incorrect. The PCM uses a stator wheel on the back of the harmonic damper to detect miss fires.

The coils and ICM are fine, they are brand new. The plugs are less then 2 months old and the wires are 3 weeks old. wires are not melted or cracked anywhere. I hopefully will be doing a case relearn tomorrow with a Snap on Solus Pro. I will let you guys know if the misfire goes away afterwards.

That may be, and I'm not disagreeing with you. But from my experience with two faulty ICM's (on older, OBDI cars) The things misfired like crazy but no codes were set. But of course ours are much more advanced so my ICM theory may not apply.

Last time I had a misfire it was the ICM and I got a code, but then again it wasn't an intermittent problem it occurred in all the RPM ranges.
