  • Oil Pump - front Cover Issues

I am completing a rebuild of my 97 Firebird 3.8 and was replacing the oil pump gears. This motor that had a bad roller lifter and the metal destroyed the bearings. The timing chain cover that the gear rides on was scored pretty bad so I attempted a junk yard replacement. On the replacement the aluminum case where the gear rides was worn about .015 and was not usable. Rather than play junk yard Roulette I gave up and ordered a new replacement cover,. (www.newgmparts.com has great prices!). Does anyone know if this is a problem area for these motors I did I just have bad luck.
    Thanks

The timing chain cover should not contact the gears or the chain. I dont remember having any trouble with this when I had my L36 apart. It is odd that the junkyard piece you found had the same wear on it though. If you are referring to the oil pump cover: that is usually included in the rebuild kit. You said your bearings were destroyed; are you talking about your cam bearings? Is there any excessive wear on the cam thrust plate?

I am talking about the Oil Pump gears not the timing gears.
The steel Oil Pump cover is fine, the gears are sandwiched between the front cover and the steel oil pump cover that is held on by the 5 Torx screws.

The roller lifter came apart and the cam bearings, mains and rod bearings were all shot.

Here is a pic of the original cover

      And the Junkyard cover

It seems that once you have any problem with the oil you can cet wear on the aluminum case. Just wondering If this is just my bad luck or if anyone has seen this happen.

The cam thrust plate is fine

Gotcha. Good pics btw. I can definitely see how metal shavings factor into the wear on the aluminum cover. It sucks that you might have to shell out another $225 for a new timing cover. There are a couple of people parting out engines on the site you might want to pm. Check the for sale section.

I did not realize how e$pens$ive these engines were to rebuild. I did my wife's 76 Vett for less than $800 I had to replace the crank too and have to be into this over $2K just in parts and basic machine work.
I think if I had to do it again id look for a good junkyard motor.
