  • serparate MAF sensor?

Ok random really weird question. You know how there is that lovely MAF sensor housing that sits right in the middle of the tb? Which makes it an absolute ***** when you are porting the tb? Would it be possible to machine out that tb and re-install the MAF sensor in a separate aftermarket MAF tube? I've seen them for the L36 believe it or not and the simply hold the sensor alone by itself without any housing intside of the tube. So am I crazy?

You can run an ls1 maf sensor and housing which is separate from the throttle body. You will have to load different tables with hp tuners though. Are you porting your tb?

Or you can machine it to accept the 99 up MAF. You still have to do a bunch of MAF tuning with HPT. I would suggest keeping the screen as the MAF is not very stable with out it. This TB does still accept the screen and the AFR stays more consistent with it in place.

Yes you can either run a seperate LS1 style MAF or use a 99+ MAF in it. However our tb's are massive already and flow way more than what our engine can take it so you end up gaining very little if anything.

Save your money and time for other mods that are worthwhile. I have done it in the past and so I am not just going off what I have read. It was a waste of my time.

I would agree your money is better spent elsewhere. The only real difference I have seen is a more stable AFR then with the 98 down MAF. Then again this didn't cost me anything.

when I was messing around with my spare back in the day I cut out metal shaft (maf housing for the 95-98 tb) with a saw saw, then smooth it out with the dremel. Cut the time down on it. But again, just stop now and leave it stock or just polish it up. You will need HPTuners to tune it if you start messing with the size of the TB and the different MAFs

I ported one of my TB's for my 96' all the way out and could never get it to run right so I gave up on it. 65mm flow is more than big enough for a 3.8 engine.
