  • an old guy's advice

was talking with a neighbor today and he asked when i was putting my exhaust on and asked what was going on it and i mentioned the ecutout before the axle and he claims my car will run like **** with it open bc there's no back pressure and i'll lose torque..true or false?

    Re: an old guy's advice

    false.

tell your neighbor i have headers and a full 3" stainless borla exhaust with an e-cutout right before the rear axle and she runs beautifully and sounds monsterous. i run with the cutout open and have no loss in power ---even dyno proven consistency.

i'd recommend a cutout by far man, i love mine.

and if it's been said once it's been said 1000 times --- (under typical circumstances of course) torque is merely shifted, not lost. it doesn't just vanish.

This is only true if you run a Dynomax turbo muffler, you will get more power. J/K LOL When I had my cutout it was too loud for me, but it did feel like the power band moved up some. I just stick to mufflers now, still need to try out my Dynomax super turbo race bullet muffler.

i ran open headers for about a month before i finished my exhaust, the car ran find. the only difference from open headers to full exhaust what bottom end torque improved slightly. it wasnt a life changing difference though. everyone has cut outs, so why would they be bad??? lol

take a dump on a plate, hand it to your neighbor and tell him he looked hungry. Then go put your exhaust on and enjoy it

                      Re: an old guy's advice

I made about 10 more hp with an electric cutout in front of my Borla.

You might have to tune for it. In the old days there was no computer to adapt to intake or exhaust efficiency improvements, and the engine could run leaner and lose a little power. That's the basis for a lot of those types of comments.

Ask your neighbor why pro drag, top fuel dragsters, and race cars, dont use mufflers.

Heh. I didn't even notice any huge effects from loss of back pressure in the very brief time my car ran with open headers. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone either, my ears were pretty much bleeding after 10 minutes of careful driving.

Only time I've noticed any affects from too little back pressure was in a friends '94 5.0 Mustang. Guy she bought it back from had it running open H pipe and it dropped rpms or sometimes stalled out at stops. Put some cheap mufflers on in the meantime and it was fine.

my car is a slow terd with open headers, theres no torque at all, i could probably accelerate on a moped faster.

Sounded badass with open headers, but everything ****ing shook! Didn't really notice the performance, since I was too worried watching out for cops.
