I hear that!!! I'm running open headers right now. Just for a couple days, til I fix my ehxuast and hangers. Its soo damn loud, everything shakes. And everytime I see a cop I throw it into neutral. The only time I did step on it, I couldnt really tell the difference, because it was sooo damn loud in the car I thought I was going to die

as an old schooler like your neighbor, ive heard this line of thinking before, but its always a trade off between the ammount of air you can move(cfm) vs. the speed of the air flowing(velosity)-its a compromise & different engines (& engine tunes) react differently-you just cant simply say that one way or the other is a universal standard

        X2

        Is your neighbor a cop?

Muffler is restricting your air flow. Remove (or use a cut-out) the muffler and you will have more air coming in your intake and out the exhaust. Your manifolds/headers and Y-pipe create enough back pressure for your engine.

Bigger engines are build and or tuned for the exhaust types they usually run

i have no idea what you are talking about because race cars do indeed use mufflers

there are sound restrictions on the race track, and they are usually put in or as an add on to the header.

and also having a cutout DOES indeed make you lose torque at low rpms, there will be less torque at a lower rpm, but in turn you will gain more power in the upper end.

plennnnnty of race cars run open headers sir. my mechanic owns a race team and has a garage full of stock cars and builds. no mufflers in sight, not even built in, i've asked.

and that's dangerous water to tread on by saying you will definitely lose low end torque with a cutout. i gained torque with my cutout open on the dyno compared to closed and my curve was every bit as strong throughout.

that was even with a blown header gasket and leaks.

so would i need a tune to gain performance with the cutout?

You will run leaner, once you go through a cutout the closer to the headers the leaner, I would guess I noticed just with a better flowing muffler I had to tune for it. This is why I just stick to good sounding mufflers instead of a cutout. I used to have a QTP cutout for about 6 months then sold it.

                  Re: an old guy's advice

thats why my cutout is near my rear end, i gained a dyno proven 8hp+ with the cutout open, also when i had it on the end of my y pipe it was too retarded loud, at idle my passenger seat would shake violently

well that's what i was planning on from the beginning...to put it right before the rear axle..i figured it wouldn't mess w/the air to fuel ratio too much if it's all the way back there..from what i read, ppl say a cutout right at the y-pipe sounds bad anyway..

Im running right out of y-pipe right now. I LOVE IT. Sounds awesome, raspy at WOT, but it so damn loud I dont think you can hear the rasp.
