  • Pacesetter headers question!!!

    hey guys,
here is my dilemma, right now i have stock exhaust manifolds on my 02 firebird, the car has 70k on it and the catalytic converter is completely messed up, rattles like crazy. Took it to GM because they have a 8 yr 80k mile warranty on their catalytic converters but they said it went bad because of my magnaflow cat back exhaust... So the option for the new free cat is gone, and a new one would cost me around 200 doing it myself, so i decided to look into another options to create a complete exhaust
I have my S pipe from my magnaflow that i never used before and i was thinking of buying the cheaper pacesetter headers, non ceramic coated, found them for about 250 shipped brand new. and then just straight pipe it to the s bend and get rid of the cat all together. Then throw one of those O2 simulators in to get rid of the code.
my questions are, would that work well? how much extra hp gain would i get from that? (the only other mods i have are whisper lid and ignition coils) should i go with the abbott gasket if i get the headers? how hard and long does it take to install? Is it bad to get headers that are not ceramic coated? what is the difference? i have a buddy who has 2 lifts in his garage and we would be doing it there. My main concern is with the removal because i do not want to crack one of those bolts! Thanks for your help guys!

um I stopped reading after hearing that your dealer fed you the BS that a catback system messed up your cat. How did they go about explaining this to you?

I have painted pacesetters to a straight pipe to the magnaflow. The exact same setup you're looking at. I can't tell you how much I gained because I never hit the dyno. But I really like my exhaust setup the way it is.

Just know that if you have emissions testing that not having a cat will probably cause you issues....

they claim that the pressure the stock exhaust had would have prevented the cat from loosening up where as the aftermarket has more flow which shook it loose. and i know it was BS but there is nothing i can really say. I told them the reason that there is a new exhaust on there is because there ****ty stock exhaust rotted out.

and to the other guy who is doing the setup i am thinking, can you send me a couple pictures of how u fabricated it? thanks,
        dave

as far as I know the warranty was voided once you put on an aftermarket catback.

get a magnaflow cat, they're cheap and flow better than the stock one. deleting the cat will sound like pure and utter *** under WOT.

so keep the cat and keep all the sensors, they don't give you some magical boost in horsepower by not being there so just go that route. it's worth the money.

x2 on the magnaflow cat. You can get one for about $100 from jegs or sumitt. I also agree that deleting the cat makes the sound too raspy. Your not going to lose a noticeable amount of horsepower by running a cat. Are there any regulations in your state regarding vehicle inspection stickers or emissions?

Just put a chunk of straight pipe where the cat would usually be...then S it into your magnaflow. Use the stock hanger in the same location; just weld it to your S-pipe. I'd post a photo but I don't have one and I don't have a digital camera. lol.

they said it sounds raspy with that setup. if you have exactly what i posted what would u say it sounds like? is it more raspy then without it?

                    Re: Pacesetter headers question!!!

GVpeformance sells the magnaflow for about $70. I wouldnt get the o2 sim if you think you will be modding more in the future. Just save up for hp tuners.

Never had a cat with it. I deleted the cat and egr at the same time I installed it all. I don't get rasp until right around 4k rpms, then it starts to stand out. Thats fine though, it lets people know what I've got. Lol.

                        Re: Pacesetter headers question!!!

ok, so i am pretty sure i am going to go with the magnaflow hi-flo cat and pacesetter headers. Should i use the gaskets they give me or should i use different ones, i hear controversy about them leaking.

alot of people go with abbott gaskets, if it were me I would too.

If you have the stock stamped sheet metal gaskets go with them and make it easy on yourself.

How much do they cost from abbott?
