  • cold air intake from hell.

As you all know, or should know, im cheap lol I try to design the craziest designes possible to gain performance without emptying your pocket.:stp::tup:

I took the stock radiator shroud from a 97 car. and the air box from a 97 camaro. bought a k&n filter for it (30) bucks.

i drilled out the box (put holes in it)

i then took a flex piece off a ls1 camaro (its about 4 inches long) (its between the air filter and the throttle body)

took off all the stock intake stuff on my 98 camaro

i got a turbo diesal intake tube off a peter build semi. (same exact diameter as airbox hole.

I put the ls1 piece on the throttle body of my 3800 and put a whole in it where the air temp senser goes. i then pointed it straight down and had the diesal intake hose in it (ive always cut it to length by now which is about 14 inches long.

i then sat the box on top of the sway bar and zip tied it down. (with the open end of the box facing the ground.)
i put the end of the intake hose on the box and BAM.

i took it for a drive and NOTICED> an OMG difference. probably about 15 horsepower difference from stock at high speed. and probably a 8 hp difference around town.

    pics coming soon.

Interesting. I'll have to wait until the pics are up.

But one thing to keep in mind. Next time it rains and you're out driving on wet roads... check to see how wet the swaybar gets. You've pretty much extended the intake as a straw to an area that is more exposed to water and contaminants. While it's highly likely for it to suck up water, watch out for any deep puddles or flash flooding.

Edit: Wait... if you have a 98, why not remove the fins inside the stock lid and do the free ram air mod? It costs nothing and routes cooler air into your factory intake setup without risk of additional contamination or exposure to moisture.

true true, but it was going to cost more to get rid of the silencer and what not. besides and high flow filter for that set up is very pricey.

i have it sitting on top of the sway bar. sure it might be low but not low enough to pick up stones or water in high volumes. (water mist does not hurt the engine what so ever and has never been proven to) (big dust particles and small dirt granuales(yes they can damage)
thats where the k&n filter comes in.

oh and the whole thing sits higher than the air dam for the radiator. so water technically cant get to where the box is. unless the car is submerged.

the intake hose is the EXACT full diameter as the opening is on our throttle body's

no way youre getting anywhere near that kind of power out of it. worth a couple more probably but not that much.

i highly doubt your design gains more horsepower than my k and n fipk that their engineers designed....

I did the same thing on my 97 originally with drilling holes in the box and changing the tubing. No way you gained that much, just benchracing dreams. lol

It is an improvement but not ideal yet for the most power

                              pics please.

It sounds unnecessarily complicated to me. If you have a 98+ just go with the LID set up and sand down the fins and add some dryer hose or water tubing from Home depot for the silencer like pace mentioned.
