Hey guys,
Does anyone make a 'straight through' replacement for the intake silencer/muffler? I want to keep my stock lid, but get rid of that damn silencer.
Might be a write up somewhere but most guys on here just use a PVC Pipe, i think i have a 3'' by 5-6 or something.
Wait, Is that a V6 or V8? 1990 Chevrolet C-K 1500 series 4.3L .. 5spd
1994 JDM Euno Roadster 1.8L 5spd Bolt Ons.. etc 2000 Camaro 3.8L Auto Bolt Ons..etc
Update -
I replaced the silencer with a piece of 3 inch ABS sewer pipe (as ACiFiC suggested.) It has an outside diameter of 3.5 inches, which is actually a hair too small (about 1/4 inch.) It seems that the ABS pipe might be a bit of a bottle neck, too. I would like to find a piece of thin walled pipe that is 3.75 inches (outside diameter) instead, which will probably be imposible to find. I am not sure a 4 inch would fit. At any rate, I definately like the way it sounds now. Much more throaty.
I also did the free ram air mod. I can definately tell a difference in throttle response over 30 mph. Great mod, and it's free !!:burn:
just make sure you dont go over a big puddle of water or water can get into your engine. I know first hand and my ETC got messed up and had to replace the throttle body
I really didn't like the way the 3 inch ABS pipe looked. And 3 inches is smaller than the inside of the boot, which means air could be bottle necking at the pipe. So I went to my friendly neighborhood exhaust shop and asked them if they had a scrap piece of 4 inch exhaust tube. After the guy searched for about 10 minutes, he found a piece about 6 inches long (I guess 4 inch isn't too common anymore since most diesels are going to 5 inch now.)
Anyway, the 4 inch fits. It is a very tight squeeze, but the boots will stretch over it. I cut it 4.5 inches long and it seems to work pretty good. You could probably due with just 4 inches, if you had to. Now there is no way that will ever be a bottle neck, and it looks pretty darn meaty too. I'll try to post a picture of it later on.
So here is a picture of the intake with the 4 inch pipe. I'll probably take it back off this weekend and paint it. I did notice a slight improvement in acceleration over the 3 inch pipe.
might want to flatten the end closer to the radiator so it does not hit your hood. i know i had a problem with that when ever i did it. also try replacing the factory fittings on the end with straight pipe connectors to help the air flow a bit better too.
I checked and it doesn't seem to hit the hood. I do like the idea of flattening it out a bit, tho. The only problem I can see with replacing the fittings would be losing the flex of the orig boots, and it coming off the throttle body when the engine twists. Not sure if that would actually happen.
Hey guys. For starters I’ve always been a big car guy, I love all types of cars and can appreciate all types of engineering. I’ve always been a Chevy...
