  • Upgrading Stock Airbox

    I've been hearing all these people talk about spending an hour or two shaving the fins down on their stock airboxes with a dremel tool. I spent about 10 or 15 minutes on mine. I used plyers and snapped all of the fins off. Hope this helps some of you. I also have a quick question. Does replacing the air silencer with a 3" PVC pipe give any noticable gains?

    yep... The plyer trick is the way to go I bought a used lid and one of the fins was still in I got it out in like 2 min...

    and I smoothed the rest of the ones out a little more using a sanding bit on my drill...

    As for smooth bellows you shoudl check out my thread

      i snapped them all off with a pair of pliers (Craftsmen RoboGrip), but there were still some little pieces left on. I chisled them off with a hammer and screwdriver, then spent about an hour sanding the whole inside of the lid down with an electric sander. VERY smooth now.

        The oval part of the intake is the most restrictive though....I'm doubting the increase in flow from just taking those fins off.

            on the upper part of the box...you'll have to loosen the clamps that keep it attached to the hose. then just remove it, rip the fins off, sand down what's left, wash the lid out thouroughly, and put it back in.

              I did all the above and then some. I took the dremel and smoothed out the ovel part of the intake. I grinded (is that a word? ground? anywho) the edges down alot and smoothed it all out, I prolly cut almost 1/8" of material out from oval part. If you do this you gotta be extremely careful, I went to far. I decided that I took out enough material and stopped, but when I touched the side, it collapsed. I could see through it, lol. I took a propane torch and some old hard plastic, and melted it back into the hole, then smoothed it all out again. It helped a little bit in the low end, but I still can't test it out too much with a clogged convertor.

                I see good response/gain in acceleration - more on the higher end - 3rd gear up. Extremely Happy about it!!!

                The Home depot PVC and removal of fins both
