since it was gutted, my cat now constantly rattles. I think the metal casing inside the cat is loose. My question is... Will the muffler shop able to weld that metal inside of my cat? Am I going to have to buy a new cat?

Check the heat shield above the cat, that rattled like a mother when I put the cat back on before! Might be a cheap fix.C. What kind of exhaust sytstem do you have and what differences have you seen since you've removed the cat? I'm gonna have mine removed when I get new pipes and was just wondering what sound/performance gains you've seen.Black 1996 3.8L Firebird A4
--------------------------
Custom CAI, Flowmaster Dual Exhaust, 160 Deg Thermo, BMR ShockTower Brace
JVC mp3 HU, two 12\" Infinity Kappa Perfects, Infinity 6.5\" components, JBL 600.1 & 80.4 amps
Pics

i prefer putting a straight pipe. a friend of mine said he could actually hear the exhaust swooshing inside the cat. i guess- my ears arent that good. i had a straight pipe on there and i liked it but i wanted to get the legal look. does your car smoke a lot with the cat gutted? mine smokes now, but i still have bad valve seals.6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

nino - I dunno if you've done any internal work, but I find it hard to believe you have bad valve seals. W/o a cat you may see some "smoke" from unburn fuel until the car warms up(open/closed loop).
I'm running a gutted cat. I've seen improvements in gas mileage and some power. No dyno or track times yet though. With my cutout closed I feel a surge in TQ at 3k, open it pulls much more linear through the rpm range.
Straight pipe would definitely be better.Keith - 99 'maro - White M5 - bumpstick and boltons - 13.65 @ 101 N/A
