I finally got my borla catback put on, but i'm not sure if i'm happy with it. My car sounded better than other v6 camaros since I bought it last year. I thought I only had the factory exhaust with a highflow cat. You couldn't even see any tailpipes before. It was a short piece of pipe comming out of the muffler, and sounded pretty good. I was thinking my borla would just blow that away. I kinda think that my previous setup had a deeper tone to it than now the borla. I am running it open. Would it sound any better using the plates? I'm looking for a deep/semi loud/smoothe sound. My friend has a cobra mustang. I know i'm comparing apples and banannas, but my old setup still seems like it sounded a little better. What can I do to make the borla sound a little better? Thanks.

I've heard more complaints then praise about borla on our cars. Give it some time and it should "smooth out".Black 1996 3.8L Firebird A4
--------------------------
Custom CAI, Flowmaster Dual Exhaust, 160 Deg Thermo, BMR ShockTower Brace
JVC mp3 HU, two 12\" Infinity Kappa Perfects, Infinity 6.5\" components, JBL 600.1 & 80.4 amps
Pics

Use the smallest plate. Its a nice deep tone. The best your going to get out of borla, unless u have a 3in cat or headders.99 firebird A4
W68 package, Y87 package,SLP ram air H.O.hood,Whisper lid,kn filter,Borla 3in. adj. cat back smallest plate, 180*powerstat, removed maf screen, 3 in. cat,ngk plugs, nitto 450 245/50 tires

If you want a deep sound then get headers with a 3" high flow cat and 3" piping. You'll have no back pressure but oh well. Just get a cam and heads package and that will take care of that.1 of a kind
Red 97 Camaro
Modifications:
SLP CAI, RK Sport Headers, Car Sound High Flow Cat, 3\" piping
3\" Steel driveshaft, SFC\'s, Panhard Rod, MAC Torque Arm
Manual Fan Switch
Best E/T:
60\' 2.152
330 6.271
1/8th 9.704
MPH 71.93

I had the full Borla with headers and 3 in/3 out CAT and always used the mid plate. Sounds much better IMHO that way.94 Quasar Blue Z28
http://www.9t4z28.com
http://www.9t4z28.com/Dyno1.htm

i love my borla. but when i did it, i did headers at the same time, so i dont know what it sounds like without it. open borla is horrible because its just like running a cutout, period. nothing gets muffled. so thats not the borla you are hearing. high flow cat and headers help a LOT. i love my borla, only exahust id get over it is a B&B triflow.

Borla is ok but the triflow sounds much deeper and just so much better.Longtubes, true duals, ram air, caspers tps tec, ls1 26lb injectors, supersix powerpack, heads milled .020, comp cam .507 220/224 114 ls, forged internals and chromeoly pushrods, bored .030 over, tb spacer, tranny built with stiffer springs and kevlar bands, bigger servo, transgo stage 3 shift kit, edge 3600 stall, 1 pc aluminum ds, 3.73 superior gears, lsd rear ,custom pcm tuning, walbro 255 in tank,

Ok, so some people are using the plates and saying it sounds better than being opened. Would you recommend this than, as i'm running it straight open now?1997 Camaro RS Convertible
White w/black top, factory chrome rims
Mods so far: Borla catback, Catco high flow cat,CAI,2 point STB,painted calipers and drums with caliper camaro decals,GTS blackout all the around,5% tinted windows all the way around,Streetglow red neon lights inside and under, raised camaro fill in decals on the rear, 30th anv decals, and a nice stereo system
http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=275528

I have a Borla catback also and i was very impressed with it. Sorry guys but i will disagree. Borla has i think one of the loudest exhausts. But to your question the plates do matter some. I have my plate at second to biggest and i am very happy with its sound. Not sure what it sounds like with the smaller plates on but i will try.Factory:Camaro 5 speed, Color Pewter, w/ t-tops and Y87 package.
Engine: K&N filter w/ Whisper Lid, FRA, Borla adjustable cat-back exhaust. How very true.
What's so bad about running it open?
