At least a 220v welder. A 110v mig (plug into wall and start welding) does not have a strong enough weld to hold the exhaust in place long enough, and it isn't hot enough to get a full "bead" of metal around the connections. I have a 110v mig and a 220v standard welder, and the 220v line does MUCH better.
The 110v mig is good for autobody repairs and fabrications.
You CAN use the 110v mig for exhaust mounting, but I wouldn't recommend it.

It sucks trying to weld exhaust pipe with flux core mig unless it is real thick after market stuff like 14ga steel.
If you could get argon CO2 mix gas and use thin mig (nonflux core wire) wire it would be a lot easer to do.\'85 Z28, T-tops new LG4 and TH700
\'85 3.4L 5-speed
mods: http://www.cardomain.com/id/oil_pan_4 the nitrous exhaust O2 safety, pg 3.
Areo space materal engineer wantabe

I've welded plenty of exhaust systems with a 110 Mig on 35 amps. Works just fine. You can also use an Arc welder on about 40 amps with 5/64 rod.99 3800 NBM Camaro - (Xcessive Xcelleration Racing Team)
Ram/Cold Air Induction (custom)
Modified 4l60e Valve Body
Z28 Catback
SS Hood
Modified 99 GM 3800II
JB Performance Engineering
jfbperformance@cox.net

I've used small 110VAC MIG wire-feed MIG just fine on plenty of exhaust systems.
I use bigger machines on bigger jobs obviously.1997 Camaro 30th Anniversary...M5, chrome 16\" 5-stars Goodyear 245/50R16
http://members.cardomain.com/issycamaroman

This might belong on another thread, but...
When installing a new cat and catback kit, what needs to be welded rather than just tightened down with U-clamps? Other than a reducer between a 3" cat outlet and a 2.5" S-pipe, it's not real clear to me.╓
║ Matt M
║ Down with the Sixxness
║ Polo Green 1995 3.8 Camaro
║ intake, cat, catback, shocks, 3.42\'s, and 12\'s in the trunk
╙

On my 3.4L exhaust I didn't need to weld anything, my cat-back bolted right up.
Right now I need to find a welder so I can get rid of my cat, weld in a resonator, and weld in my cut-out. Would a 100 amp Arc welder be ok to use???Ben

1995 White/Black 3.4L
As far away from stock as possible
My Site!!!
RedLineV6
Rebuild and 3.4 T70 Turbo is complete
Details to come....
