  • Adding Conical filter to exsisting intake.

    Hello everyone,
Since this is my first post on this BB, I want to give you some background info on me. I owed a 3rd gen v6 camaro for several years and posted frequently on another bb. I recently sold my 3rd gen and bought a 96 firbird(3.8, 3.08 rear) with only 37,000 original miles. One of the first things I did with the firbird was to go out to the local drag strip to see what it can do. I wasn't overly impressed with the 1/4 mile time(16.1, 85.8 mph). Here is where the post applies to this section of the BB. I started to upgrade certain things on the car.
The first thing I had done was to get rid of the stock airbox for a 7" conical k&n filter that slips onto the exsiting intake. It is almost a cold air setup, but without the major cost of one. I have noticed a gain in performance but I have yet to go out to the strip to see if it has changed my 1/4 time(I am expecting a 15.8-16.0 time). I do have pictures for anyone to see what I am talking about and to show people this. (although I'm sure someone has posted on this prior.)

    Be safe..

I was always under the impression that a straight through filter was more effective than a conical filter but tight spaces required a conical in a lot of applications. If you think about it, the air needs to make an extra turn once in the filter on the conical types.

IMO our stock straight throughs are a great design if you get an aftermarket lid and do either the free ran-air mod or get one of the aftermarket ram air kits.

I'm sorry, I went back and read your original post and now realize that your car is a '96 that may not have come with the same airbox as the '98-up style. In that case, due to the tight space that may be required for a filter, a conical may be the way to go.
