  • Question on exhaust tips

I put a Flowmaster 80 on my 2000 3.8. It came with dual exhaust as part of the sports package. It's louder now with the Flowmaster installed but, still doesn't make me happy. My question is, if I remove the factory tips, the goofy looking oval ones, and replace them with v8 style tips, will that reduce some of that horrible sounding rasp? Do tips have anything to do with the way the exhaust sounds? Please don't tell me to buy an LS1. I already know. Thanks

Tips can change the way an exhaust sounds, but the most exhaust sound comes from the size of the I-pipe, if headers are used or not, and if a cat is used or not. Most people with dual/dual tips seem to like the way their exhaust sounds more than those with factory or single outlet tips, but I don't know if this is because they change the sound or not.

No: there is no way to get rid of that rasp short of changing your stock piping to like 2.5 to 2.75 inch and getting a high flow cat. The bigger pipes alone might be enough. Putting a cutout on the I-pipe just past the cat will minimize the rasp as well.
