  • 3 inch exhaust

is it possible? i could have sworn i read here that people have done it. ----i am in no way worried about loss of back pressure--- at least i dont think so.
so i get to looking at the pipes and wonder if it is just the inntermedieate pipe that people are putting to 3 inch. or are there people on here that have put 3 inch all the way around? including the "S" or should i be safe ad try to get 2 3/4 all the way to the cat?

    suggestions please
6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

I have this complete setup sitting out back in my shed if anyone wants to come and get it. It has the 3' intermediate. http://www.jcwhitney.com/item.jhtml?...=18937&BQ=jcw2

I have a 3" from the Catback..and then the S Pipe as well....

I felt a loss of a backpressure and low end torque, I have to admit. But it helped my times, so top end was obviously improved.

I've got a custom 3" exhaust w/ a flowmaster 80 series muffler (3" in, dual 2.5" out) w/ a set of quad resonated tips(cherry bombs). the whole thing cost me 400 installed. I kept the stock cat that has the 2.25" outlet. I lost a little backpressure, but gained a lot of power from 2000 up 2 5250-5500, then it tapers off a bit. if u get a bigger outlet cat, u'll lose a lot of low-end, but ur top end will be very strong. u can gain some low end back if u do intake mods 2 it, cuz u'll get more air in and it'll improve the whole powerband, low-end and top-end will both be improved. if u live near sea-level and plan on doing at least heads/cam or nitrous, a 3" will be well worth the money, and after that, u can decide how big an outlet u want on the cat(stock, 2.5", or 3").

            I have RKSport Headers, 3" S-Pipe, 3" in out cat, 3" I-pipe, and flowmasters 3" in dual 2.5" out 80 series.

I'm very very happy with it I may have lost some low end torque but I went from 3.08's to 3.42's near the same time!

Besides you never "lose" the torque it just moves positions in the powerband!

I have 3" piping and a 3" cat and i wouldn't give it up for anything. My car sounds sweet and is so fun to drive. I didn't even notice a loss in low-end torque, it just feels more powerful everywhere, I also have 3.42s.

I wouldn't do the 2 45s from JC whitney, you could spend half as much money and go with a U-pipe and cut it in half, flip it and weld.

I put 3" all the way back. It's probably overkill for an n/a car.

I've heard it said that the most restrictive piece in the system is the s-pipe. I replaced mine with the two 45's (3").

Everything is stainless from the cat all the way back, and ceramic coated from the cat forward (including the y-pipe), so it should last nearly forever.

i have decided to go with 2 3/4 all the way back and keep my dynomax muffler. i understand and thank all of you 3 inch guys for your replys, but i think a 2 3/4 would be what i am looking for performance wise. how does this sound? i can get the 2 3/4 pipe from the muffler to the cat for $125. i thought that was good for one pre bent solid piece.
i will keep you all posted.

                        You'll like it. :D

Especially being that it's all the way from converter to muffler.

What about with the WS6 muffler on our cars? Since it has 3" inlets and ours are much smaller,.. would i lose any low end with juist this.

ruger, i dont think you would lose anything if it was just the muffler, but then i dont know how it would sound either.

while i was at the shop he showed me the flowmaster hp/pipe size chart. for example 200 hp: 2 1/4 in pipe, 250 hp: 2 1/2 inch pipe, 300 hp: 3 inch pipe. and i have to admit the best sounding V6 camaro i have ever heard was a 96 with flows 80 series. and thats it. nothing else but appearance mods. when stepped on it sounded mean without all the crackle.
