Ist it 2.5" or 3" y pipe? would there be any benefit to running a 3" y pipe over 2.5? should i just run 2.5" y pipe then 3" exhaust after the y pipe? or 3" y pipe to 3" exhaust?

I think everybody appears so friendly because of the question. The stock Y pipe is 3", get under your car and measure. The stock cat is 3" in and 2 1/4" out. I can't imagine anything aftermarket would be smaller than stock but RK Sport tends to suck so never know.1997 Nassau Blue Vette
1989 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 (lifted with 31\" tires)
2000 V6 Camaro, loud, cammed 210rwhp *SOLD*

You couldn't be any more wrong!!! I'll be picking up my car tomorrow, and i have my stock tubulars and Y pipe in the hatch. I'll measure and make sure of this. No way in hell that the stock Y pipe is 3", no freakin way.
I believe the RK is 2.5", not SURE on that yet. I'll look around for you blue.

whatever the pipe is that connects on to the cat, THAT is 3" i thought that was the Y-pipe? obviously the two pipes coming from the two different exhaust manifolds aren't both 3" that's retarted. but where they meet is 3"2000 NBM M6 Camaro Z28
323/335

I'm not sure what the pipes are before they run into one, something like 2" or so, maybe 2 1/4". The cross section area of a 3" i.d. pipe is 7.07sqare inches. Half of that is about the area of a 2 1/8" i.d. pipe. area = r*pi r = 1/2d
I wouldn't guess they are too much bigger than that but I'm too lazy to crawl under there and look. I was saying that the inside diameter of the big end of the Y pipe is 3". I know this because the flared 3" pipe connected to it bearly fit on the outside.1997 Nassau Blue Vette
1989 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 (lifted with 31\" tires)
2000 V6 Camaro, loud, cammed 210rwhp *SOLD*

I hear the stock ones are double-walled (a pipe inside a pipe), so any measurements you take on the outside will be off by some amount. But it looks like 2" or 2 1/4" i.d. would be about right to go into a single 3"...1997 M5
Borla muffler, SLP CAI, 1le swaybars, B&M Ripper shifter, 3.42s, rear disks, 1 piece DS
Pics of my car

pgriffith i see you have the rk headers, if you get time please measure the y pipe where the pipeing comes down off each header and also measure it right before the cat thanks i would appreciate it.Longtubes, true duals, ram air, caspers tps tec, ls1 26lb injectors, supersix powerpack, heads milled .020, comp cam .507 220/224 114 ls, forged internals and chromeoly pushrods, bored .030 over, tb spacer, tranny built with stiffer springs and kevlar bands, bigger servo, transgo stage 3 shift kit, edge 3600 stall, 1 pc aluminum ds, 3.73 superior gears, lsd rear ,custom pcm tuning, walbro 255 in tank,

This is ridiculous...why don't you just call RK and ask them. They'll tell you anything you want to know. Of course, the won't tell you that they put 1/4" 2 bolt flanges on it that aren't strong enough to support the heat. They all warp and you'll end up replacing the flanges or replacing the gasket ever 200miles. If you haven't bought the headers yet, DON'T. I love mine now that I spent a ton of time and money cutting off the existing flanges and welding on the 1/2" 3 bolts. If you want a picture let me know. Otherwise don't waste your money on the headers...they are sub-standard and a half.

Actually i knew about the rk sport headers way before you ever joined this board, I just didnt want to call them and end of waiting an hour on the phone while bill gets mike then mike asks tommy to ask jess to see if he can find robby to ask bob to find jim to ask walt how big it is, I hate rk sport they have shi*** customer service and i figured i would find out so much quicker on this board.Longtubes, true duals, ram air, caspers tps tec, ls1 26lb injectors, supersix powerpack, heads milled .020, comp cam .507 220/224 114 ls, forged internals and chromeoly pushrods, bored .030 over, tb spacer, tranny built with stiffer springs and kevlar bands, bigger servo, transgo stage 3 shift kit, edge 3600 stall, 1 pc aluminum ds, 3.73 superior gears, lsd rear ,custom pcm tuning, walbro 255 in tank,
