He had open headers, then he hooked the y-pipe back up and it sounds the same. If you have no other exhaust connected to the y-pipe I'm not surpised that it sounds the same because other than extra length of the pipes, there's nothing else restricting it. If there is a whole catback connected to the y-pipe and it soudns liek open headers you have a serious leak.

no. I took the y pipe off the headers and let the rest of the exhaust hang there. I then hooked the y pipe back up along with the complete exhaust and it still sounds the same?

Your muffler bearings are most likely shot from letting it hang like that....

Is there a gasket between the y pipe and where it hooks up to the headers?

              No.

Sounds like you just need to tighten it up more. Try sticking your head down by the side of the car with the engine running and see if you can hear where the sound is coming from.

Just go down to a hardware store and pick up a bolt of about the same length and a nut to go with it.

Why do you need to drill anything?

Are we talking about Pacesetter headers? Unless they've changed recently, the 2 flanges on either side of that connection aren't threaded, so if the bolt is broken it will just pull right out.

                                nope just stock manifolds.

then how do they stay in ? There was no nut on the other side...and why is the bolt threaded?
