  • System Too Rich

My car has been throwing SES codes for some time now about the system being too rich, the code it P0172 (i believe its bank 1 sensor 1). iv replaced that 02 sensor once a few months ago, and just about a month ago, i had to replace a Catalytic converter (probably because of running too rich)
i also have an air/fuel mixture gauge which typically reads a little over *Rich* on the spectrum, although it will sometimes sit on the high end of *Stoich.*
...anyone have any ideas of what i could do or what it might be?

ok...since you replaced the sensor and it continued, it probably wasnt the sensor. and the air/fuel gauges are suppose to bob back and fourth, not stay still so yeah, i dont know what to say other than i think you have another problem thats causing your richness

Might be a leaky injector or weak spark. Check your plugs on that side to see if one looks blacker than the rest.

the sensor does "bob," its not a stationary reading, i know there must be another problem.
ill be sure to check the plugs this weekend when i do the oil and some other maintenance...
if anyone has any other suggestions, let me know, everything is helpful, thank you!

ok, so i'm not sure that any of the plugs show any more wear than another yet, but i am also thinking that my TB might have something to do with it because of the fact that i P&P'd it a while ago, and i noticed it shortly after that. would it have anything to do with the fact that i didnt change anything electronically to compensate?

Others who have tried to P&P their TBs have run into big problems with the computer not liking what they did. With something like that, I think you really need to have the PCM tuned to avoid problems. There were a couple big threads on that if I remember. Try searching and seeing what comes up regarding a throttle body P&P.

Regarding that thread, when they refer to 98+ I think they actually mean 99+. ;)

thanks..ya, i knew about the idle problems, i just wasnt sure if that had anything to do with an O2 sensor problem, and in turn problems with my old Cat.?
i have been wanting to find a way to get my PCM tuned, but havent been able to get around to it so far. ill have to go to a local tuning shop to see if theres anything that they can do for me.
