The stock box on 98+ flows from the bottom up. Since the filter is in the middle, if you cut holes in the lid the air is going to come in above the filter and go straight back the intake.
Yeah, you're right but I think a rain-soaked filter would starve the engine of air long before enough water got through to hydro lock it.
i dont think you get the point then of what he is wanting to do. he is not going to use the stock filter nor the stock way of things so other thn that, your right. what he wants to do, is put a cone fitler on the inlet at the back of the lid and have air come in from the nostrils of his hood which is directly in front and to the top of his lid. the air will flow into the lid area, all around the cone filter, into and into his intake so without cutting the top off, air from his hood wouldnt go to the filter and since he would seal the area, it would only be nostril air. look at the pictures if you havent all ready to clearify things for you.
and about the filter, since K&N filters are not paper, they dont get rain soaked. not to mention that they are covered in oil in the first place. these filters are very porise and not very restrictive. see my point?
you would just need to get it to attatch to the inside back of the lid just like the voolant kit is. the way i would do it is take a 1/2in slice of a plastic pipe and JB weld it to the inside of the inlet that goes to the TB, and then clamp the filter to that piece of pipe cause that would give you something to attatch it to. basically what im getting at is making the voolant kit with your own stuff.
FunkZ, i stand corrected. i thought he was talking about useing the filter off his CAI which is most likely a cone filter and working with that. i apologize.
basically when you buy it, it is in two tubes connected side by side. you push it out of the tubes into a combined pill on anything like a peper plate. when they are seperate, they are worthless but together, they are a very strong glue. you just mix it together and apply to whatever need to be glued.
Hrm, okay yeah I was thinking he wanted to use his existing lid and filter.
If you wanted to try and make something similar to that Volant kit you could maybe get a piece of PVC slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the intake tube and slide it in, leaving a few inches sticking out the front. That would give you your mouting edge on the part that sticks out into the airbox area for the cone filter to attach to. I dunno though if one filter would flow enough cause you're going to need one kinda small to fit inside the stock box. Maybe need to do a Y pipe like the Volant with 2 filters.
If you're doing cone filters instead of a panel I think you have less to worry about with rain water, at least judging by that Volant system. As long as the water has some place to drain out and doesn't fill up in the bottom of the box.
<edit> LOL, dammit BLLDOGG you are too quick, or else I type too slow.
ok so i can prolly use my filter box, and customize me something, erghh i shouldnt have sold my whisper lid that way incase i messed uo something i have that
i dont know the size. im sure its been asked before here but i dont know. a quick search for the free mod where you remove the bellow and just put a pipe should yeld a number
i see no reason why the inside hole would be different than the outside hole. but yes, my idea is to use the factory lid and work with it. give it hell man! :D
