I am thinking of adding a cold air intake or ram air and i saw some photos where they removed the air silencer. is this a substitute for a cold air intake or whisper lid or both? can i do this and still use the whisper lid? thanks

Removing the silcencer isnt a substitute for either. When you install the whisper lid it requires you to remove the air silencer anyway.

actually, I say don't waste your money on the whisperlid.
Remove the silencer & replace w/ a 3" pvc pipe
Cut, grind, or break the fins inside the whisper lid (make it smooth)
there is no point in paying for a whisperlid.
so yes, removing the silencer is a replacement for the whisperlid.
Is the whisperlid better? a little maybe, I don't think its worth the 150 bucks it costs though...
free ram air is cutting a slit in your radiator shround and in the bottom of your air box to allow cool air up into the filter.2001 75th Anniversary V6 Pewter Firebird w/ Chrome Wheels, T-Tops, & Y87
Mods: Free Ram Air, !Silencer, Holley Filter, Full 3\" Hooker Catback, 3\" Cat
Best time: 15.095 at 90.00 MPH with a 2.127 60\'

I agree. On our company's WS6, we simply bypassed the silencer with a spare piece of black ABS plastic from a FIPK and then did a little dremel work on the underside of the lid. The guy that did the dremel work is a genious with it and made it VERY smooth. I am sure that it flows about as well as a whisper lid. ONLY setback is that the Whisper lid or SLP lid's opening where the air goes through the tube is a little larger allowing a little more air to flow. I dunno if it's the same with the 98+ V6's- Josh
If you have any questions or need installation pics/help, e-mail me: Viper98885@aol.com
\'93 Camaro Hardtop
\'01 Lincoln LS8 Sport
\'00 Yamaha YZF-R6
Full Throttle Performance
