  • Flowmaster exhaust on a 3.8?

I'm looking to start modding my 98 camaro, and would like some advice on the exhaust. I also own a 95 eclipse, and I replaced the exhaust on it with a catback , which added a small but noticable increase in midrange hp.

The only mod the camaro currently has is the airbox lid sanded to be like a whisper lid.

I'm wondering what kind of results people are getting with the Flowmaster catback kits on their f-bodys? I'm looking for something with a bit more rumble than the factory sound, but not loud enough to be obnoxious inside the car. I would also expect a small gain in hp, but I've heard some f-bodys have actually experienced a decrease in hp. Don't know what years those are, can anyone confirm if the Flowmaster 2.5" catback kit is producing hp gains on the dyno over stock? If not, I'd welcome alternate suggestions.

i had the flowmaster 80 series on my car before i went to borla, and it sounded alright until you get up into the higher RPM range and you get a lot of noticeable rasp (no way to avoid that *cough*v6*cough*). you will notice some gains with a catback id say no more than 5-8 HP, but if you upgrade your headers and get a hiflow cat as well you will notice more. just makes sure you get the sime diameter catback as you do hiflow cat/spipe/i-pipe so you don't bottleneck the exhaust flow anywhere. good luck!

i have the 3.8l flowmaster catback system with all the pipping and hardware. the only real differnce between just getting the whole system and the muffler is the resonator. its still sounds differnt in higher rps but i think only once has it made rasp or poping noise in the higher rpm rang. granted it wont sound like a v8 but i liek the sound and its decent rumbler but nothing that would have tons of ppl staring at you as u drive by. basically in my oppion it seems like it gets the job done. ive noticed a decent increase in power but i dont know the exact amount. there was article on here before where they tested it and got 11 hp out of it.

check out my exhaust clip. that is the flowmaster american thunder, with pasesetter headers, pacesetter y pipe, pacesetter high flow cat, custom i and s pipe, bipassed the resonator into the muffler. probably too loud for your taste

I have the flowmaster american thunder. you seem to be looking for the same thing i was. a little more rumble than stock but not too obnoxious. well thats what just the cat-back is. it has anice little rumble to it but at the same time inside the car it isnt too much louder than stock. my car definitely felt like it pulled a little harder in the mid to upper rpms than it did before. i think youll like it and its a good price too.

I have the American Thunder 2.5" Cat-back on my car. It does sound really good, but not too loud inside the car. It won't sound like a v8 but it will sound nice and deep. Most rasp is eliminated by the cool resonator that comes with it.

Same place I got mine too. I had a local exhaust shop install and weld it on for $100.

Here is that article another poster mentioned. It shows that the cat-back does give you 11hp more than stock.

from what i can see it doesnt look like they make the catback for your car. what you could always do is buy the 80 series muffler and have a shop run some piping for ya. if you look on ebay you should be able to find the muffler really cheap. that or you could just buy the one for your year car but the LT1 catback and just modify the hangers. then you have the 3" piping and everything.

The kit I'm using will not work on your car without some modification. I believe your model year doesn't have the resonator because there is no space under the passenger's floorboard to put it. They do make a kit that works with your car, go here and input your year and engine info:

i'm putting a new exhaust on my '98 after this winter and i'm looking at that same american thunder system. but does that come with one big muffler, like on the Y87, or two smaller mufflers. i'm looking for something with two seperate mufflers for around $350. any suggestions?

It sounds good at low rpm, but I had a bad rasp after 3 rpm's. Alot better than stock and not too annoying. If you have a little cash , but reasonable I just put on a 3" Magnaflow cat with a carsound cat and pacesetter headers ands sounds great without that bad rasp. Go to performancecurve.com YOu would have to do a 93-97 Lt1 conversion, but well worth it. I beleive the part # is 15620. They are offering free shipping and a free high flow cat with purchase. Can;t beat that. Hope that helps.
