  • cat is bad, time for plan of attack ... update!!

well I threw a SES light yesterday
my cat has been rattling like crazy for about 2 weeks
autozone scanned and the tool said inadequate catylitic converter performance or something ghey like that
basically my cat is bad and I need to figure out what I am going to do
I have 2 ideas that I am tossing around right now
first and the one one I really want to do...
say screw the entire exhaust system and start over changing the headers and everything after them. Do 3 inch exhaust all the way and remove the cat and figure out what muffler I am going to toss on there.
second is just fix the cat and start looking for a new car since this one is going to start giving me trouble anyday (already started)
I am getting close to 100,000 miles and stuff is just going to start wearing out and I don't know if its worth it since I dont plan on keeping this car for more than a year
so if you guys could just toss around some options and maybe give your thoughts on the first idea that would be great
    thanks

If the car is giving you that much trouble and you plan on selling it anyways, I'd just rerplce the converter and start looking for a replacement car...
Replace the major problems now, and then sell it.

right now the only major thing is the cat, it's the near future that I worry about
I was talking this over with my mom and the first thing she said was time to trade up
I'm thinking I could buy her 2002 Grand Prix GT off her, payment is $100 more a month, but I think I could deal with pimpin a fully loaded GP around for awhile before my next car. She was looking to sell it anyways to get out from under the payment, if I could sell mine and get that load off her that might work
      not quite sure yet
I could see myself keeping the Camaro and doing a few things to it, but then again, maybe I can see myself cruisin in the GP too

if i were you i wouldnt get headers, you already got tubular manifolds. just do 3 inch cat(50 bucks) and tsp rumbler(200) and youd have a sweet 3" exhaust.

things shouldnt be that bad on you car at 100k. as long as you take car of your car and do the seduled maint. you should be alright.

one the cheapest place to get cats is ebay.

            http://www.texas-speed.com/ sells the rumbler

                  what setup do you have?

IMO 3 in is perfect. never heard one that sounded better!

not restrictive enough, sounds like ****.. everything in your car rattles, dont plan on reving over 3k..
Also all you can hear is the exhaust, you cant hear the motor when you rev it, great for the track but 3 inch is **** on the street. ive got two bosal mufflers on the back and it quieted it down quite a bit, my next idea is to put a borla xr1 bullet muffler in place of the resonator

it is loud, way louder than my 2.5" flowmaster, but not insane. sounds MUCH better at higher rpms than my flowmaster did, but I dont just sit there and womp on the gas while in neutral. I do like listening to it when I accelerate from a stop though. You definately still hear it while your cruising, even when windows are up. does not rattle my car though.

what is the better wat to go? hi flow cat? or no cat?
If I am going to be doing exhaust work, I want it to sound as little like a v6 as possible.
I did talk with my mom last night and I may still sell the car, I told her to let me know within a week what she wants me to do
but I at least want to have an alternative if I do keep it
