ok thanks. will modifying my intake have any benefits without high flow headers or high flow cat?.

Shaving your airbox will not provide much power gain. However, replacing that plastic/rubber air silencer between the airbox and the throttle body with some 4-inch flexible tubing will give you a noticeable gain. Without exhaust mods.
Of course, a catback and headers will make intake mods work even better.

you have tubular manifolds on that car. count your self lucky. you can move aftermarket headers further down your list of 'future mods' if you like. the tubular manifolds are pretty nice. It is more important to get headers (you get more benefit) when you have log stle manifolds.

No SES light from air box, smooth bellows, ram air mods. You get better throttle response with the basic intake (airbox related) mods. They also compliment other more major mods such as aftermarket exhaust, cams, rockers, heads etc.

Here is some info on free and aftermarket intake options...

this may be a stupid question but what are tubular manifolds...i have a 2002 v6 3.8 and just about everything is stock except the exhaust...in which i have flowmaster cat-back...thanks for the directions on the intake...those are the ones i was using...its actually pretty simple...

the 2000+ vehicles come with tubular manifolds. they are simply cast headers. Each exhaust port on the head is given it's own 'tube' before it collects with the other exhaust down near the flange. (the conection between the exhaust manifold and the Y pipe)
Older v6 f bodies had 'log' style cast manifolds. Instead of seperate TUBES they look like a log...with VERY short ports for the seperate cylinders. All of the exhaust ports combine very quickly within the log. that type of manifold was very common on your older cars. Go look at a dodge 318 or 383 or a SB chevy for instance. Those are LOG manifolds and they are anything but ideal for promoting performance.

You can also change your spark plugs with out ANY HASSLE WHATSOEVER with those tubular manifolds you have now. It is a much more involved endeavor to change spark plugs with a '99- v6 fbody LOG manifold equiped car. With the tubular manifolds you als have no issues with the spark plug wires resting on nor being too close to a header tube.

Considering all of the above is why some people (including myself) will mention that 'you can move aftermarket header upgrade' further down your list of mods if you like...becuase you already have a very nice exhaust upgrade from the factory in the form of those tubular manifolds.

how easy is it to swap those manifolds for a log style? and is it worth it? any performance gains?
                      The confusion surrounds me
change is imminent
if I were they
we could be great

I think he means removing the silencer for a power gain...
