  • need help with 3 inch exhaust clunk *update*

Sometime back I upgraded to a hooker 3 inch catback and highflow cat. After I got everything on the car I took it to an exhaust shop to have new hangers welded on since this was an LT1 kit. So the guy uses the metal bar hangers and welds them up along with the seams where the exhaust comes together over the axle and welds on the new cat.

At the same time he put the rod hangers on he also added a 3rd hanger to the passenger side tailpipe to sure everything up and it worked well.... until now. I have been noticing a clunk in the rear end and have determined it to be my exhaust hitting the spare tire well on the passeger side.

This has gotten incredibly annoying and I would like to sure up the exhaust to stop it from swaying side to side so much. So my question goes out to anyone who upgraded to a 3 inch exhaust, what did you do to keep it secure?

I have looked at several V8's to see how they are held in place and have discovered that they have a different type of hanger which is much more secure than our rubber ones BUT uses a flat piece that slides into a reinforced rubber isolater.

I am looking for any good idea's hopefully someone has found something that works!!!

The only thing I can come up with is maybe get another universal hanger and try to secure it on the driver side at an angle which MIGHT restrict how far the exhaust can swing to the passenger side.

Just get the 93-97 stock body hangers, as long as the shop didn't modify the pipe hanger.

They are better than the 98+. V8's and V6's use the same hanger for any given year.

I had a clunk in the back- hitting over axle. They added a universal hanger and pulled it up high. It doesnt hit anymore but i hear a rattle and It may be the heat shield... its at about 1.5 RPMS... too cold to look right now. LOL
