• replace muff with resonator?

here's what i'm thinking....keep the stock exhaust system, (dual exhaust) but cut the muffler out, and replace it with a 4" diameter pipe, aka resonator. anyone tried this? thoughts on sound?

it'd still have dual exhaust out, just weld some flat pieces of metal on the ends of the pipe, cut & weld the tailpipes onto the ends of the 4" pipe

Well it will be pretty loud, not sure how good it will sound. I'm trying to get others to go with my setup. 2002firebirdguy and I have the catalytic converter taken off with a 4 inch dynomax bullet muffler in place of it, which is a glasspack, same as resonator. Then we ordered the 2.5 Flowmaster american thunder catback made for the 3.8, it has a resonator on the I pipe and a larger Flowmaster muffler for deeper sound with 3 inch chrome slash cut tips. The cat back from summitracing.com is part number 17358. It sounds great because its loud and it has a great deep tone and deep rumble after it burns in.

Did you put the 12in dynomax bullet or the 16in?

It would sound mean at low rpm I think, but IMO it would sound like a$$ at high rpm, very raspy and high, like an open cutout. Our cars need mufflers.

i'd love to remove my cat, but here in ontario we have emissions testing,(roadside too!) so i've gotta keep the cat :(

i've got a buddy manufacting this resonator idea, and hopefully i'll get it installed next weekend. i've got a 3" cutout going before the cat as well...btw, here's a pic of this resonator i'm getting built:

so i had this installed last night. i used a walker ramrod resonator, and cut out all the louvers/crap inside, so it's just a straight empty 4" pipe. it looks very sweet. got some boom tube tips too.

it sounds wicked mean at idle. very kickassssssssssss! abouve 3000 rpm neutal it all turns to rice, but under load it sounds very good throughout the rpm range. only rice that happens is when you're shifting gears--releasing the throttle--that sounds like crapola. it's realllllllllly loud....in town i have to accelerate slowly to keep the "noise" down....

one thing i noticercd....with a stock setup, if you don't have enuff ropms from a stop, one has that little hesitation when you start to move...taht dioesn't happen anymore at allllll! also my idle rpms are about 500-600 now...before this it was around 750-800.

cost------about $150 CAD. i'll post some pics & clips when i'om not quite so drunk.

another pic of what i did. the square part is the stock mu7ffler:

Agreed! I put a 16" Dynomax Bullet Muffler in place of my cat when I did my header install. With the headers, bullet muffler, and open Borla (bypasses the muffler)... it sounds just like as described above. :(

Needless to say, I run with the Borla closed (going through the muffler) and it sounds awesome! :D
