  • High Flow Cat vs Bullet Muffler?

i live in IL where you do have to pass emissions tests but i was going to get a custom cat back exhaust, flowmaster 80 series, custom 2.5 piping, and i was thinkingof getting a carsound cat until 2002firebirdguy posted about his setup with the bullet muffler, he said it sounded very throaty and good with the bullet muffler (in place of the cat) that I know want it really bad, but the things is that it is obviously illegal, my questionis is it worth it, what are the differece in hp gains w/the high flow cat and bullet muffler, and more importantly what are the differeces in sound will it still sound as deep and throaty as the w/the bullet muffler or will it sound ricey (as my set up right know is, a flowmster 40 series, everything factory except muffler)

I'm gonna say the bullet muffler, but I'm sure others will disagree.

That is a good question, is it possible to pass emissions w/out a cat on?

screw 2.5", go 3" w/ a 3" inlet/outlet cat and 3" inlet/outlet resonator, then do 3" piping to ur flowmaster. that'll sound fine, no rice.

the problem is i already have a 2.5 inlet flowmaster 80 series you think they could weld 2.5 to 3" piping and would this be bad in any way?

no, unless you go through illegal means. stick with the hi-flo cat and be done with the hassle.

but after what panman79 just said im leaning more towards the bullet muffler, even though i have 3.4 and panman has a 3.8 im sure i would have the same sounds as he would

It really depends on your ignition system. My cat was gutted the last time I did inspection here and had a MSD DIS-4, Rapidfire plugs, Accel coils and MSD wires on there and I passed better than I did with my stock ignition. Now, I have Nology wires, MSD coils, Iridium plugs, the MSD DIS-4 box so we'll see what happens.

stock 3.4 sounds a lot better than a stock 3.8. you're comparing apples to oranges but it's your car.

cool but that's over $300 additonal expense. also somehow, i think it also has to do with how strict your particular state is with emissions inspection. no cat definitely will not pass in NJ after visual inspection.

do you think the bullet muffler set up would be too loud, to a point where it would get annoying, all i want is a throaty sound thats loud enough to get attention but not so loud to where its gettting annoying, or is a high flow cat more of what i'm looking for w/this 80 series set up

It would make it sound better, but like OnixV6 mentioned, will it pass the visual inspection. I know it would in my state, and I think it would in most states, but the only one you need to worry about it yours. It wouldn't make much sense to throw a bullet muffler on there and then fail the emissions testing because the notice it's a muffler and not a catalytic converter.
