I just hand-built a ram air system for my 96 Bird! I've always looked at the nose of my bird and asked myself, "Why are those two nostrils there?" So, after I did some investigating, I found there's nothing behind the nostrils, but empty space all the way to the air intake. (My SLP CAI intake cones drop straight into that space.) Great, Off I went to Home Depot. I got a 4" x 8' piece of steel flex ventilation piping and some aluminum screen door mesh. Those cost about 12 bucks! First you'll need to take off the plastic driver side bottom cover under the car. (10mm or S.A.E. equivalent) You'll also need a 7/16th wrench to take off the nostril plate. Once you get to this point you'll see the Styrofoam molding on the drivers side of the nostril. You don't need to, but I cut out about 2 inches off the nostril side of the foam. (About a 45-degree angle.) The flex pipe extends to 8' and compresses to about 3'. I used about 5' and cut the rest off. I used a Dremmel for both of these cuts. (Wow! love that dremmel) I folded the mesh 3 times (for more protection) and duct taped it to the nostril end of the vent. After that just put into place and put the plastic bottom cover. Presto instant RAM AIR!!!
I spray painted every thing flat black, so you can't see anything unless you are looking for it. Performance wise, I think it works better than stock, but I haven't had a chance to open it up. The bird does have an instant throttle now.
I'm always playing with the bird; I'll see what I can come up with next...
I think I'll use that Dremmel and polish my own Throttle Body.
