  • few exhaust questions..???

I want to change my cat and my muffler soon to a catco cat, and a sweet thunder muffler ( link ) in place of my i-pipe with a turndown before my rear axle....

i have a few questions that definetly need answering....

    1. Is it alright to have a turn-down tip
underneath my car before the rear axle??

    2. I'm going to completely cut off my old exhaust and put in a new cat and the muffler will go where my i-pipe goes. But I dont think there are any exhaust hangers where the current i-pipe is, and since i wont have my old muffler in the back anymore is it alright to have NO hangers on the i-pipe? will it hang down or anything?

    3. Final question, i see on my 3.4 that the pipe sort of bends to go over some kind of support, im not sure what its called. But if i the setup i want on my own, is there anyway to bend the pipe so i can make it over this support??

    Thanks for all your help.

I have a similar setup right now. I have removed my ENTIRE exhaust system after the I-pipe. I opted to go without a cat. My Flowmaster 40 series is mounted where my cat used to be. From there I have a turndoun pointing out the passenger side exiting the car around the rear floorboard, but you can't see it from the street. I have never scraped it on anything yet. It sounds really really good. Just be sure you don't have hot exhaust shooting RIGHT at your gas tank or rear diff. Other than that, you'll be fine. All of my stuff is 2.75" btw.

I was going to have a turndown tip pointing at the ground.
      Would that be alright?

What about not having a exhaust hanger? Can it be supported without bouncing around?

An exhaust shop can fab up some hangers with no problem. How far back are you wanting to go? Like RIGHT BEFORE the rear axle, or just somewhere near there?

not all the way back to the rear axle, maybe like a foot or two before there.

Turndowns are fine, but they resonate like a mofo. Take it as far back as you can, trust me when I say this. I'd love to hear a Sweet Thunder muffler on one of these cars, those chambered mufflers sound sweet. As for getting over that support, the best you can do without taking it to a shop is to buy some prebent pipes and arrange them so they work for you, but depending on how intricate it is you may not have enough room to use clamps and it would need to be welded. Also, do not go without a hanger. It is generally too much stress on the pipes if you do so. See if there is a place that either has a hole, or somewhere you could drill a hole, then use a nut and bolt with one of those strap hangers from Autozone.

how about if i take a hammer and bend it alittle so it clears the support? would that be alright or would it mess up the exhause flow?

Birdie is right. Your interior is gonna RUMBLE! I can't talk on my cell phone or hear my radio alot of times because of the exhaust noise.
