• Removing the MAF Screen------>

Yeah, yeah, I know..... I pulled my out this weekend. After talking to a guy who owns a shop, and works almost exclusively on F-Bodies, he told me that the 2002 LS1s and Corvettes don't even have a MAF screen from the factory. So, I pulled mine. There is an immediate and noticeable effect...a lot better power across the band, the car runs like a raped ape now.
Also, for everybody wanting to hear different exhaust sounds, I'm going to be dynoing my car again in May, and I'll try and find something to make a recording on (the question is if I can find a digital recording device). I dyno'd it this weekend, and it sounds pretty damn good all the way through the band, no raspiness or buzzing. I have a Flowmaster with WS6 tail pipes, that's it. If I can get the recording, I'll probably need some help posting it here, if anybody can do that.

No idle problems, nothing, in fact, the idle is deeper and louder, as the exhaust note is all across the range. And yes, it vastly improved my performance. I do have the air silencer replaced with a 3" piece of PVC pipe, so it's a straight shot from the air lid to the throttle body, so that may have something to do with it, I don't know, but it runs awesome.

I dunno about that, but 99+ 3.8's seem to have little or no ill affects from removing the maf screen.

For the 96-98 3.8 this probably not an advised mod.

It seems, from what Ive heard the only neg. effect has been a rough idle. I pulled mine Saturday and after 150 mi. still have had no problems, idle or anything. More power? Yeah, I think its a little better.

Oh yeah, don't forget us 5,000 1995s with 3.8s

Yup both my 00 and now my 02 are 100% fine without it and run a lot better.

I saw +5hp on the dyno and +10 torque ALL ACROSS THE BAND removing mine on my A4 00 Firebird - and thats enough proof for me.

Sorry to reiterate all this.

I do agree, the MAF screen DOES make more laminar air flow across the MAF and probably runs the car to where it wont ping on 83 octane - but if you're running good fuel and keep the engine cool, I don't see a problem in removing it.

I have a '98 and my car did just fine with this mod.

puff puff give man!!!!

hehehehe, I'm kidding of course. Well then I am mistaken. I just was assuming it would actually serve a purpuse since the TB's are not straight.

hey the MAF screen is that black netting thing in front of the TB right after the lid right? If that's it, how do you remove it and is it possible to put it back on if it starts to have a bad effect on your car (e.g. SES light)

Its a rather big task to get it out... do a search though its been brought up a million times... If you can't find anything, e-mail me. I have a 97 with it pulled on 87 octane gas running just fine. The idle is a little rough, but more like a older muscle car! It has that random idle feeling. Its not very noticeable at all. Car runs better though. Maybe because of my intake.

I have done it on my 98 and it gave it a rough idle. The sound of the air going into the engine is alot louder. Exhaust tones didnt change any. And no performance was gained. I think he meant that it is a bad mod for the 95-97 3.8's. Thats what I heard anyway. I dont know why but just what ive heard. I dont like the mod on my 98. I dont like the way it idles. But I cant put it back because I broke it when I pulled it out.

Can someone say specifically why it's not so good for pre 98's?

I pulled mine and got an SES light, and then for no reason the light went off. On my '98 I did notice an improvement power-wise, as far as the exhaust goes, it was so loud to begin with, it's kinda beyond hearing suble differences. I would say go for it on a '98.

This is not brain surgery. Look at Dominic's posts. All you need is the little scissors on a Swiss Army knife to gently pull out the retaining ring/clip and you're done.

Three minutes tops from the time you pull the hood release to the time you close the hood.
