  • Problems with no cat and o2 sim on a 97? (Have searched, look inside for reasoning)

Ok, here's the deal. I know my 97 bird has four oxygen sensors. One on each manifold, one before the cat, one after. I've got an O2 sim already to eliminate the rear (after-cat) sensor and I will be reinstalling the pre-cat sensor when the headers go in. Im not concerned about the difference in lowend and topend power, only in the air/fuel trims. My question is, after the cat is gone will the pcm be able to accurately adjust air/fuel trims and will I have any problems OTHER than the inefficient cat code that the O2 sim should cover? Im not concerned about the SES light being on that much for an inefficient cat and I have an O2 sim to cover that, but I need to know if the car is going to incorrectly adjust air/fuel trims or anything when the cat is gone. Anyone?

i run a hollow cat and an air/fuel gauge...not the best of diagnostic tools but it didnt seem to effect it much if at all...never set a code either

there really is not much the PCM can adjust for, you just lowering the back PSI against the piston pushing out the exaust. all the PCM will do it look for rich or lean and adjust from there.
i did this on my 97 and the ran just fine don't swet it

The reason I asked is that a couple sources told me the cat was needed to provide a restriction which built up exhaust heat to keep the precat o2 sensor in proper operating range and if the restriction was gone it wouldnt heat up right. It sounded wrong to me b/c the sensor is already heated by wire and the exhaust is still gonna be stupid hot there b/c the ceramic coating on the headers will keep the heat in and flowing through the pipe much more so than the stock manifolds. Thanks for the replies!

Didnt say they suggested problems with a high flow cat, they suggested problems with NO cat...
