well if the 3.8's are junk why would it be any different from the 3.4's?

I can show you how to do this for about the price of a filter. You take a cotton gauze conical filter from like autozone and use K&N oil/cleaning kit to oil it (the filter should have a 3-3.5in rubber boot at the end).

You take a piece of exhaust pipe and get it cut into a ring about an inch long (the diameter should be the size of the air filter rubber boot; the ring stiffens the rubber boot so it can be hoseclamped later). You put the ring inside the rubber boot of the filter (it should be tight!)

You take the filter and push the rubber boot into your stock plastic ducting that comes after the elbow (your stock air box is removed at this point; if you have the correct size filter, it will slide into the stock plastic duct).

You now tighten the stock hose clamp, and you are good. This will cost like $30-35 for the filter, $10 for the cleaning/oil kit (which can be reused a lot), and prolly a dollar or two for the ring from a muffler shop.

        It should look like this:

I got the one for the 3.4L. it is better than stock. much better. I can't compare it to anything else sinck I haven't tried anything else but it does work. yo may want to do to some mods to it though. 1 throw the incleded filter in the trash and stick a K&N on it. 2 make a block off plate for it to keep the air that much cooler. hell use a peice of cardboard for that. 3 wrap in that heat resistant wrap. what ever you do don't listen to people that say that if you get a palstic intake that it won't get as hot, if its 200 degrees in the engine bay then the intake will eventually be 200 degrees, plastic or metal.

I had the K&N CAI for awhile. I can't tell any difference from my K&N and the setup I made, but the block off idea is a good idea. That's something I was gonna do to my DSM, but haven't got around to yet.

When at speed though, the block off won't do a whole lot better on a camaro though. The air comes straight out of the headlights into the filter on my setup.

what is the purpose of air filter oil? Why would yo need it on a new filter?

Yeah that's when it would help the most.

On the subject of why oil the new filter, some cotton gauze filters don't come preoiled. Just seemed a good step to add just in case it wasn't.
