I bought it from SLP and they only sold the rear section kit. This was about 4 years ago, and it was only 100 bucks as a new take off. Don't know why a pipe didn't come with it.

It only rices when it's in neutral and you rev it over 4000 RPM. Otherwise it sounds like a V8, especially at lower RPM's.

Good times, cause i never rev my motor, i just want something where i can get on the gas with a girl in the car and not have her ask why it sounds funny, but rather say that it sounds nice/mean.

So stock z28 catback on a 3.8L is pretty deep and mean, I am looking for dead quiet

Ok, here's what I know about F-body stock mufflers from my experience (I had a 98 Trans Am as well). I don't think the I pipe has much to do with the sound, but definitely performance.

The stock V6 muffler, with one or two tips, sucks. It is restictive and quiet...I think we all know this.

The Z28/TA muffler is better, it has to allow a lot more flow from the V8 through compared to the V6. The Trans Am I had was very quiet with the stock muffler, a very muffled rumble unless you punched it. Then it roared enough to get people's attention.

The SS/WS6 muffler is better still, because the SS/WS6 exhaust ADDS horsepower to the same V8. If you ever listen to them, an SS/WS6 is also a lot louder than the Z28/TA, stock of course.

So what does this mean as far a the V6's go? Here's my take...

A Z28/TA muffler on a V6 probably adds about 5 horsepower and will not be much louder than the stock V6 muffler.

An SS/WS6 muffler (this is what I have on my Y87) adds (according to SLP) 10-12 horsepower to a V6 and from my personal experience is definitely louder than stock. It is not anywhere near as loud as an aftermarket exhaust, but it's definitely rumbly and it screams wide open.

If you want looks an quiet, a Z28/TA muffler is the way to go. If you want some V8 sounds and some noticebly ponies, go for the SS/WS6.

Sorry that was so long...

Only thing that worries me, is I had a stock z28 catback on my 3.4L and it sounded like an aftermakret setup, not too loud but like an aftermarket setup.

granted my 3.4L was TONS louder then my 3.8L in every shape and form(open y-pipe etc...)

I just want a setup that will sound like a dead quit muffler.

well the best you will find for that is a z28 take off. I cant think of anything quieter.

Nothing is quieter than the stock V6 muffler. The Z28 take off is close second. That's the best you're going to do.

I have a T/A take off exhaust on my car. It sounds really mellow and good at idle but rices out...sounds kinda 350Zish in some way, but not that good. :D

I wanna ditch it for a LT1 Flowmaster catback. I've come to the conclusion they're all gonna rice out and I like slowmaster the best. :D

My 85 ranger sounds mean as hell with its straight pipe exhaust but I'm more likely to pick up more chicks in my camaro, even though it doesnt sound near as mean

My .02...
Are you going with Z28/V8 exhaust to have 3inch cat and I pipe to the muffler? I noticed you have a 2002.
Read thrue my posting a couple of weeks ago. "Is the y pipe welded to the cat". I got a lot of good feedback and help. I have a 2001.
I was just under the car to remove the passenger side lift bracket. (&*&%$#@&...*&@#!*!!!) and got a good look at the stock exhaust. I have not checked the 'over the rear end section yet (mid pip) but that factory 2.5 inch S pipe is mandrel bent. There is also an O2 sensor mounted at the start of the S pipe right after the cat. Seeing that the stock S pipe and I pipe are mandrel bent may change my idea about putting in a full 3 Inch LT1 cat/s pipe/intermediate pipe. Now I might just go with an edelbrock or magnaflow V6 catback (2.5 inch, mandrel bent). They start at the mid pipe and go over the rear end...with muffler and tips.
Muffler shops will not touch my perfectly fine CAT as the car is so new and has so few miles. This is what lead me to make a post...to find out all that is required to 'do it myself.'
I noticed you asked about the Instal Kit? I am assuming you mean something like the SLP "S" pipe istall kit? The 3" magnaflow catback system for the LTI includes the S pipe section. It comes with a Flange for the Cat...but we have a welded CAT. So the flange needs to be cut off. Our CAT is 3 inch in/ 2.5inch out...so you will need a new CAT that is 3/3. Then you cut off the flange from the LTI S pipe...clamp that on to your new 3 inch out cat. You will need to have an O2 sensor bung welded into your new LT1 S pipe right behind the cat. ( I have not done this intall yet...so I don't know if our cars will pass emissions with the less restrictive 3" cat and 3" S/I pipes. (possibly not enough back presure to force the CAT to heat up to good operating temperature.) In that case we will need to add SIM.

Ok, here is a reposting of the help/tips from my original similar post....

From ellik:

Among other things, I chose the 3" magnaflow setup for an LT1 because it comes with the mandrel bent 3" S-pipe. the outlet of the Y for my pacesetters was 3". (edit...we have tubular manifolds which are pretty good. They each collect into the stock 3" Y pipe.) I bought a 3" high flow cat. viola! perfect. all I had to do was cut the flare off the end of the magnaflow S-pipe (set up to bolt to a flanged cat) and band clamped that to my new cat, and band clamped the cat to the Y-pipe. You will need to get an O2 bung welded to the S-pipe, or get an O2 sim for the post cat O2 sensor.

Another reply:

Different people have different results with high-flow cats. Some get lights, some dont. From what I have noticed, it seems like Catco are the worst and Carsound/Magnaflow have the least problems. Just as a nice coincidence, there is a seller on Ebay that has great prices on Magnaflow cat backs and usually include either the cat, or free shipping (or both) in the auction. (edit...we do not need an "air tube" on the cat. Some cats come with O2 sensor bung already mounted in rear of cat...I plan on researching this to see if it will negate the need for adding O2 sensor bung to the 3" LTI S pipe)

And finally:

You said you want to go 3". What you will need to do is take a Saw-Zall and cut the stock cat off cleanly in front of the stock cat. There it will be 3". Put on your 3" in, 3" out high flow cat. Bolt up your 3" cat back. The Magnaflow LT1 setup has the exact same routing as the v-6's and comes with a 3" S-pipe that will bolt right up to the new cat. All you will need to do is cut off about 1/2" of the S-pipe as it is flared for a flanged connection. I do not believe any other setup comes with an S-pipe. Thats where you have to get the SLP install kit, or whatever it is they call it.

Some have told me we have stock 2.25 S pipe. I am pretty sure we have 2.5" S and I pipes....stock replacement mufflers have 2.5" in/dual 2.25 out....

we have stock 2.25" pipe all the way from the cat back. that includes the s-pipe and the muffler inlet.
