bring the piston to TDC on the rockers ur working on and tighten them down until there is no more play in the pushrods then go ahead and tighten them another half of a turn after that

I'm completely ignorant with engine work. How would you know when it is at TDC? Would the rocker extend up?

Just make sure that the certain rocker you are tightening, is on the base circle of the came. (No lift). And the start tightening while twisting the pushrod with your fingers. DO this till you cant turn it anymore, and like 94firebirdv6 said, then go another half turn. Then follow the firing order and do the rest of the intake and exhaust rockers. You can tell it is at TDC of #1 by look at your timing line on the harmonic balancer, and then lining it up with the timing marks by turning the engine over by hand. Good luck. Shouldnt be too hard. ;)

you can tell when its at TDC when both of the valves are completely closed

I recently adjusted my rockers. Make sure you don't overtighten them too much or you motor will make a crazy sounding whine. You want to tighten each valve when it is fully seated.

honestly, go buy a haynes or chilton's manual for the 3.4L... I did it on my 94, its not a joke of a task, With the step by step of putting it top dead center and turning it exactly how much of a turn and which intake and which exhaust valves to tighten. Helps alot. Its gonna take a long time to do, and I suggest getting new o-rings for your injectors when you pull the fuel rail out. I didn't do it and got away with it but lots of people have skipped getting new o-rimgs after pulling them and had fuel leaks which lead to engine fires after awhile.

Also while you hav ethe upper intake plenum off I suggest cleanign it with various cleaners same with the TB. 6 months after I did this I seafoamed the motor, had nearly no smoke, did my girlfriend's car, that had 45k less miles on it and hers smoked for a good 15 minutes.

I did it and stopped all motor tick I had even when I sold the car ~20,000 miles later.

Also a big reason for getting the book and doing it exact at first... if you mess up you do not wanna have to tear everything down again trusth me... Thats the hardest part, doing everything to get the valve covers off.
