  • quiet dual outlet muffler?

I was posting this up in the z28 takeoff thread...

I know a z28 takeoff on my 94 was just as loud as an average catback, not loud but louder.

Either way I was wondering what about a GTP muffler? Dual outlet, probably better free flowing then stock. think its worth going up to a bigger I-pipe(2.75, stock z28 i-pipe) with a cutout in it and a GTP muffler in the rear?

Or do you think the I-pipe will be too loud?

    GTP Mufflers you mean?

All 3800 W-bodies (except the 2005 GP GT's) have dual mufflers. Typical pontiac y-pipe setup over the rear axle.

Not true...The Impala LS has a single outlet muffler and the Monte Carlo SS has two single outlet mufflers. Buick Regals also have one single outlet muffler. Only the Grand Prix's have a cross-flow dual outlet muffler like the F-bodies.

The GTP muffler will be as quiet as F-body Y87 stock...but I doubt it'll flow much better.

The simple fact is that more flow will create more sound. If you reduce restriction you reduce noise insulation and the exhaust gets louder.

I understand more flow is more sound... just looking for something slighty better but still to the average person coudl be considered stock sounding.

I understand where you're coming from...didn't mean to slam or anything.

I really think anything stock sounding isn't going to perform better. Any stock 3800 muffler is designed for the 200 HP rating, whether it is single outlet, dual, or dual muffler.

You're best bet is to stick with the stock V6 I-pipe and get a Z28/TA muffler and tips. Like I said in the takeoff thread that I did that with an SS muffler/tips and it IS louder than stock. The Z28 takeoff is definitely quieter because it makes quite the difference in sound on the V8's.

I think the reason your 3.4L was a lot louder is that you had the full Z28 catback. The I-pipe might make a difference. Try just the rear section of a Z28, and you might pick up a few HP and still sound quiet...at least as close to stock as you can. You could try the idea of a GTP section as well, but again, I'm not sure that'd be any different than the stock dual tip muffler on the Y87 Camaros.
