  • Voiding the warrenty??? Need some advice!

Hi guys. Im new to the board so bear with me. I am really... really intrested in getting a new cat back exhaust system for my 35th Anv. v6 maro. I have the $$$ and i am ready to get all of my parts i need as well as instalation fees. Here comes the tricky part. #1 the car is not in my name #2 it was givein as a gift to me and #3 i have only made a few pament's on it as well as insurance.

Now since the car still has a year left on the warrenty my father is dead set telling me that if i were to put this new exhaust cat system on it with headders that it would void my warrenty. He mosty told me about how my engine most likely has all these polution parts that help to keep polution to a minimun. Along with the he said they would haft to be removed and that would be classified as ''tinkering with the engine''. And once again that hit home with the voiding of the warrenty. Now i did some research and found that at the most i would need new hangers to mount to system to my v6 maro.

Im just really discouraged that my father is really laying it on me saying i can't get this exhuast cat system i want. Not to mention it's my birthday this 16th. I hope some of you guys can give me some info on my ordeal and really help me out.

headers would most likely viod the factory warranty, not sure about the exhaust, it didnt with mine. It also depends on the how the dealorship is, some are cooler than others

Bolt ons shouldn't void your warranty at all, they're only freeing up what power was already there. Now if you used nitrous or any other power adder then it'd be voided for sure... IF they found out anyways ;) . Now I can tell you for sure that whatever parts you replace will not be covered by warranty anymore. For instance if you change your exhaust its common sense that your warranty won't cover those parts if they break. About the emissions equipment: Just because you put headers and stuff on doesn't mean you HAVE to remove all the emission sensors and such, you can have the stock 02 bung welded right back onto any aftermarket exhaust.

So I'd say bolt on whatever you want, my dealership knows I've done several things to my car and they still replace any stock parts under warranty if they happen to break. As a matter of fact they compliment me on the tastefulness of my mods, they say "it's good to see somebody still knows how to fix up a muscle car unlike those ricer punks!"

Agreed...bolt on's will only effect exactly what it does...if you replace your exhaust...sure the warranty on something for your exhaust will be gone...but everything else will be fine.
I have headers and still have all of the emissions junk on my car.
Like he said...do the bolt ons and your engine will be fine under warranty.

thank you guys so musch for the responses. Bolt on you say? hmmmm I was leaning towards gettin the borla cat system for my maro, but it said for v-8's/ LS1's. This site told me that it didn't matter if it wer for v-8 or not that it would still go on with replacement of new hangers.

I have the general idea on this concept but some new and professional light on this subject from you all would be much appreciative. I also had a question about my s-pipe..at least i think it's the s pipe....maby it was the y pipe. But anyway....i learned that with exhaust kit's that these pipes or s-pipe is not included and is recomended to purchase somewhere else then rather the body shop whip one up for you. Is this true or all gibberish?

So just how do shops go about putting these on??? I have allways thought that alot of welding was involved....at least more than bolting i guess. And to my understand....if i do get headers and an exhaust kit...that only thoes two items would not be covered by warrent and that the rest of my car would still be covered by warrenty???

If so that would be awsome becuase i htink my dad is trying to tell me that i would loose the warrenty on the whole entire car!!! Hit me back

As long as you get a cat-back designed for the 98 up f-body you dont need new hangers.

The S-Pipe is what connects the cat to the I-Pipe and no its not included. A 3 inch cat back will ned a new S-Pipe or adapted, but if your going to get headers as well just do 3 inch the whole way from the start.

You can buy the S-Pipe from slp, buy 2 45 degree pipes from jegs or have someone make one for you.

THe cat-back will come with exhuast clamps to use. You don't have to weld anyhing unless you want to.

I have the borla system...you'll be pleased if you go with it.
If I were you I would try to install it myself.
It is a VERY easy install that will take you a couple hours MAX.
Any questions you would have on it people would answer, and it would save you a couple hundred bucks. No welding is required with the Borla cat-back at all...the clamps it comes with are great and I've never had a leak.
Also you won't need new hangers...borla comes with everything you need to just slap it up under your car.

#1 is your biggest problem. Best bet I suppose would be to read the warranty. People think that even changing your own oil will void the warranty.

I don't think changing the exhaust will void it.

                Good luck.

It all depends on the dealership.. YES they can make your life a living hell for jsut putting a LID on.. HOWEVER.. most wont.. IMO take a trip up to your local dealer, talk to one of the service people and ask them.. If you ask in advance then you will know...

                  thats the best aproch IMO..

Don't worry about it voiding your warenty. I've heard of dealerships refusing to do work on a modified car, but since I've done the below mods to my car, it's been to two different dealerships (one at home, one at school) to get 2 new power window motors (each door once) and new gears in the rear axle (for gear whine). Neither place said a THING about the mods, almost like they didn't see them (which is impossible). Unless your local dealer is nuts, you should be fine with doing just your exhaust. The only problem is once you start, you keep thinking about what you can do next. If it wasn't for tuition, my car's suspension would get a nice kick at the end of the summer.
