  • what to clean egr valve with

I am thinking I need to clean my egr valve because I am getting some kind of wierd miss.. under deceleration of all things.. I am thinking that during regular cruising the egr is opening but when I let the throttle body go closed the egr isn't closing also.. sooooo.. what is something safe to clean an egr valve with? I got a big can of brake parts cleaner ( I love that stuff) and am wondering if I can use that without screwing anything up.. I do plan to let whatever I clean it with dry thoroughly.. either that or I might make a blockoff plate but thats kinda a last resort..

I wouldn't use that. Throttle body cleaner will be better.

GM has a chemical out called "Top Engine Cleaner." You can get it at the dealership for about $5.00 per can. It will clean the carbon deposits from your engine's intake tract, top of pistons, EGR system, etc. It's a really good way to bring your aged engine alive.

Are you sure that it is a miss? Especially under deceleration? Sounds more like a exhaust back fire to me. But you can use either brake cleaner or carb/TB cleaner. If you block it off, you'll set a code and won't pass emissions if you have 'em.
