IMO, go for exhuast first. You will enjoy the sound more and see bigger gains. I second that. With an exhaust, you get looks, sound, and performance. You really can't beat that with any other mod!
Oh, and for exhaust, don't even bother with getting a muffler only. You *need* to get a catback to be happy. Look up the Edelbrock catback at www.summitracing.com (< $300)

Flowmaster for $266 @ Jegs is a excellent price. Expect the whole thing to cost maybe $400 (high estimate) with the install.
People are gonna say that flowmaster sucks, but it kinda depends on what you want. If you want a nice sounding exhaust for a reasonable price, flowmaster is one of your options.

I just got a 3" flowmaster exhaust w/ an 80-series muffler and resonator tips installed for $400. I was quoted $300 if I stuck w/ the stock flowmaster slash-cut tips. well worth the money. The good thing is, you get more top-end power, so you keep traction off the line while pulling hard to redline which is where you make the most power anyways.2001 Arctic White Firebird<br />More mods than I\'m allowed to list!

Cold air first.
Then cat back
See, cat back is good cause it will finally make some noise but you want to be able to back it up first.
I had an intake first, then cat back, then more intake things and extra's then finally finished the exhaust

I also agree with 12sec. If your intake isn't modded, your exhaust will sound like crap. Well, at least mine did. Go with a muffler first. I suggest flowmaster because it's what I use and produces the tone that is most appealing to me. As for an intake, just get the K&N replacement filter as a temporary replacement over stock. It only costs about $20-30 depending on where you buy it from. The K&N is cheap enough that you could purchase it at the same time as your muffler and it will give you not quite as good a note as a CAI but it will sound and perform a lot better than the stock paper filter. CAI kits are a waste of money, but a lid is a great idea. On www.installuniversity.com there are detailed instructions for Free Ram Air (FRA) mod that is equal to or superior to any of the aftermarket kits and it is absolutely free! If you have a dremmel tool and takes only 15 - 30 minutes to perform. I did this mod to both of my Camaros. After performing this mod, you can lift out the air filter and see the front of the A/C condenser sloping down to the front air deflecter and to the ground. Make sure to replace your air filter often or get a K&N or Holley PowerShot with this mod, though.\'01 Camaro M5 1SA \"Lightweight\" hardtop, Bright Red, Ebony cloth, FRA, Whisper Lid, B&B cat-back, Torsen 3.73 LSD, HPPIII (93 octane setting)<p>\'00 Camaro SS M6 T-Top, all GM and most SLP opts., Bright Red, Ebony leather, 4.10s, SLP long tubes, Loudmouth, CNC Stage II H/C, etc.
